Osama bin Laden is dead. Get the troops out now!

On Sunday night, we learned that U.S. forces killed Osama Bin Laden. After 10 years of war, it’s time to bring the troops home from Afghanistan.

Please sign this petition immediately which will be presented to the White House to begin a swift withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan.

We’ve received tens of thousands of signatures in just 24 hours, and we’ve caught the attention of Washington, D.C. Here’s what U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) had to say about it on Democracy Now! today:

“[T]his petition…really does give us the wind beneath our wings that we need here in Congress to begin to exercise our leadership responsibilities and to say no more combat operation in Afghanistan. And so, I really want to commend Robert and all those who have begun this.”

With Bin Laden dead and al-Qaeda driven from Afghanistan, there’s no good reason to continue spending $2 billion a week on this war.

Please join the tens of thousands of others calling for the return of our troops to the U.S. after the death of Osama Bin Laden. Sign our petition today.

Did anybody bother to think that maybe Obama knows what he’s doing after all? Leave it alone, folks. He’ll get the troops out, and soon. But he’ll do it in a manner that makes sense for all involved.

I don’t know, but I think the guy just might have earned a little bit of the benefit of the doubt on this one?

Hey, Obama might know “what he’s doing” but that doesn’t make what he’s doing right. I can never condone sending teenagers off to fight over some bullshit. We should have never been in Afghanistan. Osama bin Laden was a thug, representing mayhem and screwed up religious beliefs. He represented no government. Our actions in Afghanistan and in Iraq have always been and remain “illegal” and he was pretty much taken out the way he should have been – by good “intelligence” which led to where he was, involving a few guys who know very well how to do what they did. I don’t get misty eyed over military operations but you point the Navy Seals to the problem and they will take care of business. And they don’t care if they have to run 100 miles and swim a hundred miles and scale and jump off a skyscraper to do it. Back in my marine days I saw them train and all you can say is “Wow!”
I’m not an Obama basher, as such, but he has children, and anyone with children should be extremely careful before we send “children” off to war. We need to be out of Afghanistan yesterday. We were there to get OLB (and I don’t mean Our Lady of Beauty) and we’ve done that. Out. Let them grow their poppies. They do that well along with kicking anybody’s ass who wants to change gunshots with them. Why should the U.S. play that game?
It was once said “War! Ummm! Good God! What is it good for?”
“Absolutely nothing!”
It’s as true today as it was yesterday. Obama should know that.

A good place to really here some stories is in the rec room at Balboa hospital. You can hear some kids not even old enough to drink yet tell about their experiences and thoughts since coming back. Interestingly, some are pissed off they can’t go back and others are thankful to be getting out. Some feel gulty about their involvement and others have a middle finger attitude towards people who don’t like violence. Some are just plain indifferent. Either way there just kids and it’s just sad.

“Abbottobad” That sounds kind of familiar. I once hid out from the SDPD for 4 or 5 years in Ocean Beach. so ot’s not inconcievable Obama, I mean Osama Bin Laden was able to keep under cover for a number of years.

The U.S. Runs three operational air bases out of Afghanistan including Drone operations against Pakistan. The U.N. also runs military operations out of this base structure as well. Obama may initiate a troop withdrawal but the U.S. has no plans of removing its presence from these bases or any other in the region.

4 things to keep in mind as we watch corporate media coverage of assassination of OBL
US could have had him in ten years ago but Bush turned down the Taliban offer
FBI does not connect OBL to 911…no hard evidence (google FBI Osama bin Ladin 911 or call FBI)
Imagery of single headed global terrorist network is dominant…cut off the head and body falls.
No discussion that ending Al Qaeda terrorism = ending Western occupation of Muslim lands even though OBL and others have said that is the primary reason for their terrorism against US and its western allies (see Pape/Feldman Cutting the Fuse)

Since the two major goals of US post-Cold War policy are:
1. Making sure another power (Russia, China, Europe) doesn’t rise to rival US supremacy.(thus the continued existence and expansion of NATO)
2. Maintaining access to and possession of key strategic resources (Central Asia gas and oil, Afghanistan minerals and pipeline routes)
Don’t expect any US president to ‘get out’ of Afghanistan. The best to hope for is that the direct occupation will be replaced by ‘indirect occupation’ but it will still be occupation.

I signed their petition, but I would have preferred something more specific, like a petition to bring home the National Guard and other reservists ASAP.

We should absolutely bring our troops home. We should be loving one another not be killing one another. The creator did say choose life. So stop killing!!!!
