OCEAN BEACH, CA. In a dramatic but not unexpected move, the publisher and editor of a 1980’s progressive publication, “the whole damn pie shop,” has offered OB Rag an exclusive opportunity to scan some of its issues. The Pie Shop, a bi-monthly free left wing alternative to the Reader, was published from 1981 to 1986 by a group of Ocean Beach peace and anti-nuclear activists, some of whom now write for this blog, by some strange coincidence.
The first issue to be scanned, No. 10 – the July- August 1984 edition has articles on “Cold War Olympics,” “Fifteen Years Since Stonewall”, a neighborhood-by-neighborhood breakdown of those who voted for Presidential candidate Jesse Jackson and his Rainbow Coalition in the spring primary, a debate about “Strategies for 1984,” with the issue ending with a piece “Remembering Vietnam.” This exclusive arrangement has confounded media left observers and confused rightwing wing-nuts. Cries of “foul!” are already reverberating in the virtual corridors of blogworld. Despite all this controversy, we have decided to proceed with this exclusive posting. Enjoy.
