Comparison of Proposals for Car Free Zones in Balboa Park, San Diego

There was a discussion Sunday, April 10th, on KUSI Channel 9 with a debate between Irwin Jacobs and Bruce Coons of Save Our Heritage Organization (SOHO) regarding car free, parking place free, pedestrian only zones in the central plaza, the Plaza de Panama, in Balboa Park. They invited the public to go to the park and see for ourselves the merits of the two proposals and that’s exactly what I did, the results are illustrated in the video below.

Someone should propose a car free street at the Beach. It would be Newport and Bacon to Santa Monica and Abbott. No cars of any kind. Ambulances only. We could make it the Bourbon St . of the west. I know it wouldn’t work because of beach parking, but we should figure out some way to draw more attention to Ocean Beach.

dave rice April 18, 2011 at 7:39 pm: It would be an eyesore, but if there were a 2-3 story garage somewhere near the beach but not on it (the Appletree parking lot is the only thing coming to mind), I’ll bet it would create enough parking to offset the loss of a block or two of Newport…and while running Abbott to Santa Monica too would be cool, it’d kill off the pier parking – I don’t think you can lose that lot and even think about making up for it and all the street parking elsewhere.
