Survey USA has released its poll on “favorable” ratings for different San Diego politicians who could campaign for the Mayor’s office in San Diego, the election in 2012.
In the “favorable” opinion of those 515 registered voters polled, Donna Frye has the highest rating:

Bonnie Dumanis …. 31%
Bob Filner …………. 30%
Christine Kehoe ….. 28%
Carl DeMaio ……….. 27%
Nathan Fletcher …. 20%
Kevin Faulconer …. 20%
Steve Francis ……… 13%

I like Donna Frye, but I don’t think you can just look at the favorable response.
Donna Frye has high unfavorable numbers, she would need to overcome.
If you look at the unfavorable responses, I don’t think Frances or Finer has a chance.
Both Dumanis and DeMio have very good numbers, IMO.
I think Dumanis could win against any of the other names if she runs.
First of all, for a poll to have any real meaning, you must have a sample size of at least 1000. So take these poll results for what they’re worth, which is really not much. That’s just how statistics work.
Second, Donna had a lot of work to do in order to shift public perception of her more toward the center. Five years ago she was WAAAAAAYYY too far to the left to be a viable mayoral candidate, and gave the impression that she was unwilling to compromise on anything.
She has since taken a more moderate stance on the issues. Whether that’s simply a political calculation on her part or a more accurate depiction of how her beliefs and values have changed remains to be seen. But because of the leadership she has shown in working with Mayor Sanders over the last four years, and her willingness to compromise and sign on to some measures that clearly would have been difficult for her to swallow in the past–for example some of the pension reforms, and Prop D to raise sales taxes to fund essential city services like police, fire, and lifeguard–demonstrates a great maturity and understanding of how to get things done in government, particularly in an area that tends to be a bit more conservative than other major locales in California.
If she stays more toward the center, she’ll appeal to a much broader portion of the voters than in the past, and she’ll have a real shot at winning next time around.

Andy- What this country needs in addition to a good $.05 cigar are politicians who stand on principle. Not pragmatic opportunists who will sell out the common good for unenlightened personal gain. Oh, the progressive grassroots of the community has a history w/ Donna in addition to Zucchette. But let’s save that conversation to a few cold ones at the VFW
Frye or Filner
I’d rather Filner stay where he is. Better to have him representing the region in Washington than to have a far right wing Republican take his spot should he choose to run for mayor (and I’m not sure he could anyway, since I’m not sure he lives within the city limits. His congressional district is much of East County and Imperial County).
Recall that in 2004, Donna Frye ran for mayor as a write-in candidate. She won enough write-in votes to be elected mayor, but some of those votes were thrown out by the courts because the box next to the write-in name was not checked, or because her name was misspelled. Donna Frye was clearly the voters’ choice for mayor, but we ended up with the incumbent Dick Murphy until he resigned in disgrace a few months later. Murphy was followed by Deputy Mayor Michael Zucchet for a few days, until he resigned in disgrace.

Bonnie Dumanis has the inside connections to existing power structure followed by Filner/Demaio in addition to having her name in the public eyes throughout the past year. First thought comes to mind of the 3 Dumanis wins. A stroke of genius in regards to the city fiscal situation, roads, schools, new library and convention center could prove an upset. SD has some considerable challenges ahead and this is a real turning point ie to become the mayor and provide considerable value beyond all expectations could pave the road to Sacramento/higher up positions.

Having Dumanis would be like having a Sanders…except having more hair on the head.
The poll isn’t even close. Every pundit chiming in certainly feels that their own well meant, rhetorical political opinions are obvious stabs-in-the dark on the mayoral game of “who’s on first?!”. Though very entertaining, all this banter reflects a lot of ignorance and how ill informed we are.
Three polls have been covertly taken over the last 8 months just by one candidate. A sampling of a San Diego City council district alone needs at least 1500 opinions to form a decent consensus in name ID alone let alone a mayoral race. I imagine when the school yard conjecture smoke clears and voters start weighing the facts of past performance and no-nonsense plans of reform presented by each candidate makes logical sense; then the guess work seen here is just that, “guesswork” and no better than the poorly executed poll being criticized.
hello, donna frye, carl demaio, kevin faulconner, sherri lightener, or anybody else, would you please tell me why it costs $100,000.00 (A HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS) per toilet stall at the proposed Palisades Park comfort station in Pacific Beach ? (Law St. for the locals)
I would like to be able to justify this expense to the street people outside the Pacific Beach library waiting for the PB Planning Board to finish their Jan. 26,2011 meeting, so they could go to sleep. The Ocean Beach Brighton Beach unfinished comfort station would like to know as well… thank you….
