Fireworks over the OB Pier by Jeff Stone, July 4, 2009.

Future OB Fireworks could be more expensive and more difficult to permit

Editor: The future of fireworks over the Ocean Beach Pier on the Fourth of July and everywhere else was the subject of a heated discussion at the Water Board meeting on December 16th. The discussion was so lively that it shot off its own – un-permitted – fireworks.  The following rather tame article was the only thing recently published we could find about the meeting.

By Dave Schwab / La Jolla Light

Players largely reiterated their stances on a tentative order that could make it a lot harder — and expensive — to host fireworks over water potentially threatening community-oriented Fourth of July displays like the one held annually at La Jolla Cove.

Environmentalists and representatives of the fireworks industry and communities and organizations hosting fireworks displays over bodies of water crossed swords again at a two-hour public workshop Dec. 16 at the California Regional Qater Quality Control Board of San Diego in Kearny Mesa. The workshop was an opportunity to comment on Tentative Order No. R9-2010-0124, originally released on Sept. 23, 2010.

The constant barrage of airplanes over OB deposits more pollution than the singular fireworks display. Why does no one say anything about the soot from that? We could use some clean-up funds from the SAN.

Right on about plane soot! If I was able to vote, I say cancel air travel and forget about fireworks and I would enjoy the peace and quiet….that is as long as the ambulance sirens aren’t going, dogs aren’t barking, sewer and water crew isn’t using the heavy equipment, landscapers aren’t cutting lawns and blowing dirt around and nobody’s blowing their horn cause they are too lazy to get out of the car and knock on a door when the go to pick somebody up!

Today, with the nasty weather and the usual outbound planes we are blessed with the inbound planes…. I am not that crazy to be livin in OB :-(

Maybe we could have a laser show instead of fireworks.
