Home Invasion in OB on Santa Cruz – 2 Arrested and 4 Detained
It seemed almost like an episode from “Terriers”. A home invasion in Ocean Beach around 2am on Santa Cruz near Cable, where the thieves and intruders collected cell phones, a safe, and pot. After the incident, police surrounded a home up on Chatsworth and arrested two men and detained 4 others. Here’s the report from SignOnSanDiego:
Two men were arrested and four others were detained early Thursday after a home invasion robbery in Ocean Beach.Six men, armed with handguns and expandable batons, burst through the back door of a home on Santa Cruz Avenue near Cable Street at 2:18 a.m., San Diego police Lt. Precincts in the City that wanted to legalize marijuana
By now everyone knows that OB precincts during the recent election went strongly for Prop 19, the marijuana legalization proposition, which ultimately failed (but which garnered more votes state-wide than the GOP gubernatorial candidate). By far the most discussed statewide ballot measure in the Nov. 2 election was Proposition 19, a proposal to legalize and regulate recreational use of marijuana. Voters ended up rejecting the measure. Prop. 19 won 46.5 percent of the vote statewide and 47.1 percent in San Diego County.
But its local opposition certainly wasn’t uniform. Precinct results show the core support for legalizing marijuana came from uptown, downtown and beach communities across the county. … In the city’s more central region, Prop. 19 divided Ocean Beach and peninsula neighborhoods further up the hill. OB candidate for governor still getting press and still has signs up from Primary campaign
Richard Aguirre – the guy who ran for governor from his Ocean Beach hometown – is still gathering some media coverage for his run against Jerry Brown – who won of course. He claims he would have “kicked the shit out” of Brown – if the two had debated. Even though the Primary that Aguirre campaigned in was in April, some of his signs are still up around town (there’s one high up on a telephone pole for instance at W. Pt. Loma and Ebers). No more free juice on Newport Ave results in less crowds at StarBucks
The San Diego U-T reports that the City’s efforts to turn off the free electricity that Newport Avenue squatters were taking from the lamp posts has resulted in less crowds in front of StarBucks. Go here for Christopher Cadelago’s piece.
Marine Protected Areas Approved
On December 15th, the California Fish and Game Commission (FGC) approved a marine protected area plan that will protect iconic places like La Jolla, Catalina Island, and Laguna, safeguarding southern California’s ocean future. The Commissioners voted to adopt a system of underwater parks that will dot the coast from Santa Barbara to the border with Mexico, forming part of the statewide system called for in the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA).
Southern California’s new marine protected area plan will protect sea life and habitats at biodiversity hot spots while leaving nearly 90 percent of the coast open for fishing (see a map of fishing areas left open) . The new MPAs will improve access for recreation, study and education while boosting the overall health of California’s ocean.
The meeting room at the Hotel Mar Monte was packed with divers, surfers, students, scientists, and other ocean fans wearing blue to show their support for marine protected areas. The Marine Life Protection Act planning process has drawn wide support from elected officials, business owners, and citizens who recognize the value of smart resource management(http://www.caloceans.org/news/tide-turning-in-support-of-mlpa)

OBMA awards local storefronts for holiday displays
With the theme of “Ocean Beach … Older and Better”, the OBMA has awarded four OB businesses cash prizes for the best storefront holiday displays. First prize – Best Theme – for $200 went to Cottage Antiques at 4873 Newport; 2nd prize of $175 for Most Whimsical went to Lighthouse Ice Cream at 5059 Newport; 3rd prize- Most Traditional, for $150.00 went to John Baker Picture Frames at 4735 Point Loma Avenue, and 4th prize for $125 – Best Painted Windows went to Bone Appetit at 4845 Newport. Judging occurred at December 1.

I was laughing during the Prop 19 debate. It always seemed like on other Blog sights, people were trying to preach things about it.
1. Tax it heavy because of the deficit
2. It will reduce the crime rate
3. Create jobs
4. Discourage the drug cartels from selling Americans drugs.
I never understood why the people couldn’t admit that they just wanted to get high legally without hiding the joint from the cop driving by. Why else would it be on the ballet for the past 10 years and probably again the next elections?
My mom’s an avid fan of classical music and dance – I assure you that if there’d been a single ballet produced with a pot theme in the last decade I’d have heard of it.
As far as a measure on a voting ballot, I’m not aware of any other opportunities to vote for recreational cannabis on either a San Diego, California, or national ballot in the last decade either. Was I too stoned to catch it?
Sadly I have to work tonight, but I highly recommend checking out the workshop at OBCentric! I had a blast at the last one I attended.
Big shout out to John Baker Picture Frames! He really helped me out recently, and did a FANTASTIC job framing some sentimental artwork. Michaels may have been a little cheaper, but the customer service I got from from John and his assistant and their cat was top notch. I highly recommend using him for anything you need framed. And congrats to him on the decorative prize!

We love John and his cat… buckets? I can’t remember. I met him once when Bill dragged me in there to meet the cat. He was gracious and kind and not at all surprised that people stop in just to say “hi” to the kitty.
