OB Rag birthday cake

About 50 friends, supporters, advertisers, and staff partied down to celebrate the 3rd birthday of the OB Rag website and the 40th anniversary of the original OB Rag – the underground newspaper begun in the fall of 1970 – on Saturday night, the 30th of October.

Marxists at the party! Uh-oh!

It was also a Halloween costume party! With prizes donated by Gary Gilmore Goldsmith, by the BBQ House, and by the Old Townhouse Restaurant, best costumes went to Dan Morales as the Mad Hatter, to Sunshine as the pregnant nun, to Bob Edwards for the Fidel, and to Brenda McFarlane for being OB Raggedy Ann.  Raffle tickets also went to Lerue Rockhold and to Michele Engleman.

It was a giant potluck, with catered meats from the BBQ House, and birthday cake by Patty Jones. Our gracious host and hostess were Annie and Court, who decorated their Poe Street house with some pretty scary stuff.  The brother and sister acoustical performance by Daryl and Cass Craine was a joy to experience, and everyone said it was a great party.  One staffer said it was the best party she’d ever been to!

If you would like to attend next year’s birthday party, please join our staff, become a contributor, an advertiser or supporter. We’d love to have you!

Thanks to everyone who made this event possible – see ya next year! (and every day in between)

(Thanx to Bryon Morton (who’s in half the pics) and Doug Porter for photos.)

Thanks to everyone who wore a get up. The costumes were just great. The food was superb, and you know it’s a good party when people don’t stop eating the entire time. Annie and Court allowed us to use their house and they are very generous people. Thanks to the local OB businesses who contributed prizes. It was just a wonderful time and it was so grand seeing the mix of older Ragsters from another time and the current staff. I can’t say enough about this gig, definitely very memorable. And so many Marxes.

For a minute I thought you typed, “And so many Marxists”.

Great party to be certain. once i navigated past that scaryass skeleton on the front porch (no, not you doug) it was a night full of wonderful conversations with great friends and new friends, belly tugging laughter, and enjoyable banter amongst the costumed and non-costumed alike. as we celebrated the evening away i was reminded why i love OBceans so very much. Most of us have heard the expression “it takes a village to raise a child.” for me, this village, “OBvillage” raised my hopes and dreams for a brighter future again. something magical about this place indeed. something worth preserving and standing up for.

Kudos to the OBRag for 40 years of keeping it real in the local community. so very many issues have been addressed over the years in your paper and now via this website. your commitment to getting stories covered, discussed, polled, and voted on shows us all how it can still be done ~ and done well.

one question … who made that fantastic pomegranate salad? I would love to make it at home. would the mystery chef be willing to share the most delicious, refreshing, heaven-sent recipe with the rest of us?

I almost didn’t make it but I’m glad I did as there was a very nice feeling in the house. The highlight for me was seeing Linda T, an old friend, a softball teammate of my Nancy, and one who is way up on my list of great teachers as I watched her weave her creative magic in the classroom with my twin daughters when they were at Memorial Jr. High. OBeacians rock. OBeacians roll. OBeacians are like food for the soul.

Somebody left a pair of sandals at the OB Rag birthday party last week. Let me know if they are yours. Again, if you want to be invited to next year’s party, simply join our supporters, advertisers, bloggers and staff. It’s that simple.
