Amikas to Hold Community Meeting to Discuss Midway Proposal
Tonight at the Point Loma campus of San Diego Community College, there is a community forum on a local non-profit’s proposal to turn the old Midway Post Office into a supportive housing for veterans, women, families and seniors. Amikas, a San Diego non-profit organization recently formed to address the housing crisis in the region, is submitting a proposal to the USPS for the Midway Distribution & Processing Facility located at 2701 & 2535 Midway Dr.
However, there is apparently a move to oppose the proposal. Found in a coin-op Laundromat on Midway Dr next to the tattoo shop at 2373 Midway Dr. was a flier calling for a protest of the proposal. Not quoting from the flier exactly, it had the following message:
“AMIKAS is planning to turn our Post Office into a homeless shelter that could serve up to 2000 single/drugie /alcoholic/mentally-ill MEN! [sic]..
… Please come to the meeting and voice your opposition to Amikas’ plan to destroy Point Loma!
So, there may well indeed be a clash of ideas at this community forum. Amikas.org has a proposal to create a supportive housing community for veterans, women/families and seniors: three of the fastest-growing groups of “new poor/homeless.” Congressman Filner has expressed a letter of support for the adaptive re-use of this federal property for veteran housing. Maurice Martin is a homeless veteran and Amikas Vice President and will give part of the presentation, along with Jeeni Criscenzo President of the Board.
Amikas will be presenting their proposal to transform the USPS Midway Processing & Distribution site into an intentional community for people who have no place to live and are willing to work to build and maintain their own self-sustainable neighborhood, on Tuesday, August 10,2010, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at San Diego Community College, West City / Pt. Loma Campus at 3249 Fordham St.
Fliers announcing the forum have been hand delivered to businesses in the Midway area to invite public input in ways to address the growing number of families, returning veterans, seniors and young people who are unable to find employment and affordable housing. A lively exchange of ideas is expected.

Sounds like a fine idea to me…especially those with families. If the breadwinnere has no job the children have no home. Men can get around the city on their own to get to the meals and services offered to the homeless, but not the women with children.
And with the county’s dreadful track record on processing food stamps, families are going hungry. This sounds like a reasonable solution for keeping families together and helping women and children be safe.
