OB Street Fair T-Shirts Ripped Off!!

OB-Street-Fair-2010-logoThe folks who run the OB Street Fair have a new heartache.  Someone broke into one of their volunteers’ cars and besides taking personal items, also escounced with a box of Street Fair T-shirts.

The T-shirts stolen were in a huge box of mostly men’s tanks in black and a number of small and medium size men’s T-shirts. Volunteers were taking boxes home to fold the T-shirts over the weekend and bam! . . . some bad guy a steals one of the boxes. The t-shirts were all printed by the James Gang and are sold to raise money for the Street Fair, Fireworks and lots of OB projects. All the shirts have the street fair logo (two sandals, stars and the words “Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off Festival”) on them.

The OB Mainstreet Association, one of the chief sponsors of the Street Fair, is offering a $100 reward for the name of the guy who did this and hopefully for the return of the shirts. The car was parked on Bernice just off of Catalina Blvd when it was broken into.

Anyone with info on this dastardly crime, please contact OBMA at the office 619-224-4906 or info@oceanbeachsandiego.com .

If they were black tank tops with the flip flop logo used in this article it was an inside job. Someone recognized no male would buy those shirts and it was better to write it off for tax purposes by claiming a theft. It beats the humiliation of failing to sell even one shirt.

C’mon dude. OB males are not these macho characters that you supposedly understand. OB stands for diversity, tolerance and understanding – please wrap your brain around those concepts.

tweakers out of OB!

I have to agree! My personal views on most drug use are pretty liberal, but that stuff is pure evil!

Hey JC?
go back to the place you crawled out of !
you obviously don’t belong in OB!

What kind of diabolical mind thinks of shirt like that?
You must be a rethug-lican Mr. JC

I wonder where these shirts go. An SUV was stolen with boxes of Arrest Bush shirts last year. The SUV was finally recovered down near the border and the shirts were gone.
I’d love to see a video from a third world country with people wearing that shirt but, alas, we’ll prob’ly see big corporation logos.

Denny Knox just emailed me: the shirts have been found –

Hi Frank,

I guess there is justice. Two bad guys were caught this afternoon for something else they were up to . . . and in their stolen car was found a big box of OB Street Fair T-Shirts. The Harbor Police found the shirts and returned them to the James Gang because their tags were on the shirts. Susan James is doing the inventory on them but the box looks pretty full. So, things are back to normal (whatever that is).

Thanks for offering to run the story!

While it is great that the shirt were returned, can we focus on the real issue….the logo design. I mean seriously…make a great logo for all ages that represents OB & you’d sell a ton. Instead, we have a family t-shirt with bright flip flops. Doesn’t exactly represent most of the crowd for street fair.

Personally, I wear the most comfortable flip flops in the world…..SoulMates from The Black. Not only do they have those wonderful massaging reflexology bumps on the walking surface, they run under $20, and my first pair have stood the true test of wandering in OB for over a year now.

I say the logo represents at least one comfortable OBcean properly.

Real issue was that they were ripped off, not that they didn’t appeal to art lovers like me. And You, dear OB_Warzone.
Scrolling down to your comment about the dog poop, you can always get a brown Sharpie and change it. But no, I guess you won’t buy a shirt to contribute to the fireworks fund so may we count on seeing you at the Free Fireworks on Independance Day?

Well….if we must use the sandal, at least put some poop at the bottom. POINTING AT THE HIPPIES….Clean up after your dogs!?! Just because it’s dark and you’re too baked to realize your dog stopped, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check to see if your dog took a dump in the middle of the sidewalk.

And I suppose your idea for a design would be a skull & crossbone, or deadhead dancing bears, maybe something like the OB University logo the James Gang prints up or perhaps a marijuana leaf in a chili bowl? I’m not saying there isn’t a market for a more alternative design, but you probably have to look at it from the perspective of the OB Main St. Assoc.. They want lots of families here because that’s the demographic that’s more likely to spend their money in our restaurants and stores. So I think they want the logo to be more widely accessible. Maybe there should be more than one logo. A sort of underground OB street fair t-shirt? I’m not saying I don’t agree with you, I’m just trying to rationalize why they opt for something a bit more “safe.” Personally I think it’s better than last years (if you recall, it was a quite unintentionally phallic) and I’ll buy a shirt just so I have it and can do my part to support local. Whoever made the design did a nice job. Whether it’s my style or not is another story.

Yes, if we could get a skull smoking a bowl of chili while riding a wave next to the pier, I think you’d have my ideal shirt. I think I’ll get my crayolas out.

Seriously though, there’s a guy that makes the OB logo/chargers t-shirts. Those are pretty cool and not sanctioned by the Chargers or the Main Street Assoc. Maybe someone should come up with an alternative. Maybe the OB Rag could sponsor an alternative design contest for next year. I think you’re onto something War zone. Or maybe just on something. ;)

Jon, why can’t we sponsor an underground alternative design for THIS year, with half of proceeds going to …. back to the OBMA or OBTC?

I was thinking with only 2 weeks left, it would be a long-shot to have a good design drawn up, funds raised to buy and print the shirts, and a booth to sell them at. But if you think it can happen then sure! I’ll help if I can.

Frank Gormlie June 10, 2010 at 11:33 am

I was thinking “real underground”: hand-drawn with guys with long coats saying “Hey, pssssst! Got some real underground T’s for ya,” wandering around the Street Fair.

Almost done with my design, does anyone have an electric blue crayola? Trying to stay hip with the kids. I heard they don’t like regular colors

Reply

OB_Warzone June 10, 2010 at 2:03 pm

also, I wasnt trying to knock the logo, it was meant in a “constructive criticism” way. Just wanting to raise more money for OBMA

Reply

Jon June 10, 2010 at 2:45 pm

I hear ya. I’m not knocking it or necessarily in favor of it either. I think whoever made it did a great job, but it’s just not reflective of a large segment of younger folks in OB with a taste for clever or “alternative” graphic arts. <—that sounds lame, but it's the best description I could come up with.

Anyway, I think we're really on to something here and I'm glad you brought up the issue Warzone. Thanks for commenting.

Warzone – once you’re done with your design, send it to us and we’ll publish it (as long as it fits in with the spirit, ya know, not porno, or whatever), so do it!

Sorry my fellow Obecians I must side with the comments about the design or the lack there of. And they are right in saying you would sell a lot more tee shirts, Just look at last years beach ball madness which actually looked phalic, now this year isn`t a whole lot better. I have donated music to “Waves CD” and am all about helping the town out, just take a look at my current bands website header and theres your shirt, this should be so easy. http://www.jetwashband.com DJ.

So I totally missed this article when it originally went up, but I’ve got a question – did anything ever happen with regards to a second volume of the Waves album? I still rock last year’s from time to time for kicks…
