Dianne Bell and Jim Grant sticky on OB Street Vendors?
Dianne Bell, the Union-Tribune columnist must really like Jim Grant, our local photog. He gets more write-ups than anyone else that we know. Here’s what Bell said in her column today (6/03/10):
The colorfully painted wallets offered by street vendors in Ocean Beach grabbed Jim Grant’s attention. Were they…? Yes, they were made of duct tape. When he asked one of the self-described “urban travelers” what inspired the idea, he expected to hear that the peddlers had been smoking something other than cigarettes. Instead, a vendor replied with a grin, “We all want more money to stick with us.” Apparently the idea, or the $2 “sticker” price, caught on. When Grant returned the next day to buy one, they were sold out.

Sick Eagles Try to Sneak Onto Dog Beach
Early in the morning of June 2nd, Border Patrol agents discovered a small Mexican fishing boat, called a panga, filled with sick eagles trying to sneak onto Dog Beach. The ill birds were suspected of flaunting US customs and had just motored or sailed through the international border and landed at the first beach that was available. It just happened to be Dog Beach. All 13 “ill eagles” were taken into custody on suspicion of entering the country illegally.

Lifeguards rescue Ocean Beach surfer
By Susan Shroder, Union-Tribune Staff Writer
Friday, June 4, 2010 at 7:05 p.m.
SAN DIEGO — A surfer who was rescued Friday evening in Ocean Beach was taken to a hospital in serious condition, said San Diego lifeguard Lt. John Everhart.
The surfer appeared to have suffered a medical problem about 5:30 p.m. Friday while in the ocean between Brighton Avenue and Voltaire Streets, Everhart said.
Other surfers assisted him in the water until lifeguards reached him and took him to shore. The man, who was unconscious, was treated onshore and then taken to a hospital, Everhart said.
Our roving beach reporter, Sunshine, has just called in a breaking news bit: Headline: 10 city employees and 3 emergency vehicles just responded to one dizzy surfer. A surfer by the name of “Lucky” just came out of the waters near Dog Beach complaining to a lifeguard that he felt dizzy. Over the course of the next few minutes in this cash-starved city that has laid off cops and closed down fire stations, 10 city employees (2 lifeguards, 5 fire fighters and 3 para-medics) all responded arriving in 3 vehicles – a lifeguard SUV, a fire truck, and an ambulance. Lucky was carted off the beach strapped to a gurney.
We know that first responders to an emergency must do their job, but why did it take 10 workers and three vehicles to deal with this one, fairly minor, incident?
Guess “lucky” was not to lucky…..
