Young at Art Beautify Corner at Cable and Newport
The corner of Newport and Cable just got a whole lot brighter, thanks to a group of very young art students. During 2 weekends in April, students at Young at Art Children’s Art Center painted one of the decayed electrical boxes on the southwest corner of Newport Ave. and Cable St.
Kim Howell, co-Founder of Young at Art Children’s Art Center, said:
“They’re so excited to do something out in their community…they had so much fun, and that’s a big deal. They [the students] think it’s so cool to go out do something with their artwork that people can see. A lot of them came back to look at it after they were done.”
Howell created the project when she saw the need for some new public art in Ocean Beach. It’s so cheerful!” said John Noble, owner of Coastal Sage Gardening. Noble and his staff conduct weekly maintenance on the planters that line Newport and he said the color is hard to miss, and said it was nice to see “such a colorful addition to the street.” Check out the photos!

Deadline for OB Historical Society Annual Photo Exhibit and Contest (was May 13th) now extended to May 19th
May 19th is the new deadline (it was May 13th) to get your photos into the OB Historical Society for their photo exhibit and contest – “OB Exposed.” The exhibit and contest is open to all ages and levels, and any photo – old or new – color or black and white – is acceptable. The photos must be taken in OB or Point Loma.
Submit your photos to James Gang Graphics at 1931 Bacon, (9 to 5, M-F). All photos must be matted or mounted on card stock or other art paper. There is a form to fill (go here for the link) out and a $1 entry fee. Last year’s event was a wonderful display of photos of OB.
Fire Rings Saved But Watch What You Burn
Now that OB’s eight fire rings have been saved (at least for another year), we need to join local residents’ request that folks who use them only burn what’s supposed to be burned. Four plastic carts were just found in a smoldering pit, two of them melted. They had “property of Rite Aid” stenciled on them. So, please no plastic, no wood pallets, no plastic chairs, no furniture. If you see something like these things being burned, please step up and remove them or ask them to be removed.
OB’s Sacred Heart Parish School Family Festival- May 15
The Sacred Heart of Ocean Beach Parish is having its Family Festival on Saturday, May 15th. It will be from 9:00 a.m. til 6:00 p.m. on Saratoga Avenue between Sunset Cliffs Blvd. and Cable Street. Proceeds benefit the Sacred Heart Academy.
Rummage Sale to Pay for OB Elementary’s 4th Grade Sea Camp
This Saturday, May 15th, from 7:30-12:00, OB Elementary is holding a Rummage Sale. Proceeds will help pay for our 4th graders Sea Camp. The school and sale is at 4740 Newport Avenue.
OB Planning Board to Discuss Sunset Cliffs Traffic at Project Review Meeting on May 19th
The Project Review committee of the OB Planning Board meets on Wed, May 19th, at 6:30pm at the OB Rec Center (2nd Wed of each month). Tentative Topics include:
- Sunset Cliffs Traffic Study recommendations – Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Issue
- City of SD Stormwater Maintenance Master Plan Impacts – Water Quality Issue
- One possible residential project and one cell phone tower modification project
Please attend this meeting as the Planning Board would love to get public input on as much as possible!
Planning Board Fills Vacant Seat in District 3
At its last meeting, the OBPB voted to appoint Scott Waschitz to the vacant seat in District 3. He was one of three people to submit signatures, and all were strong candidates. Scott is an architect who lives locally, and that he spoke at the meeting of his desire to help serve the community while promoting sustainable building practices within OB.
Peace Movement to Hold “Die-In” Against the Drones Made by General Atomics May 19th
Join Activist San Diego, CODEPINK, Nevada Desert Experience, Peace Resource Center of San Diego and San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice in a demonstration against the world’s largest and leading drone manufacturer, General Atomics.
Demonstration, Street Theater, Die-In at General Atomics Headquarters (Makers of the Predator & Reaper Drones) will be on Wednesday, May 19 8-10am, at 3550 General Atomics Ct. San Diego, CA 92121. Parking is limited at the demonstration site so we will be organizing shuttles.
On Tuesday, May 18, there will be nonviolence training, a prop-making workshop, and that evening a Public Forum on Drones with plenty of speakers.

City opens bidding for OB Pier Café concession

The city of San Diego is seeking bids for someone to operate the Ocean Beach Pier Cafe and the bait and tackle shop after its lease expired with the current operator Feb. 28.
The Land Use and Housing Committee voted 4-0 on April 21 to issue a 14-page request for proposals for someone to operate the city-owned concession building built in 1966. The vote passed without comment, and District 2 City Councilman Kevin Faulconer said it was standard procedure to issue requests for bids when a lease expires.
The latest operators are Charles and Shannon Fisher, who have run the business since 1993. Charles Fisher told The Peninsula Beacon he has not yet decided on whether to bid to continue running the café and bait and tackle shop.

OB Beach Ball – CANCELED until 2011
The OB Beach Ball was scheduled for May 22th and it was to have a Ferris wheel. But the OBMA is very sorry to announce that, due the requirements for a five day visit by the giant ride not being authorized by the City, and also due to a lack of sponsors, it is forced to cancel the event Saturday. It will return in 2011.

School Board Candidate Forum at Liberty Station – May 20th
The Voice of San Diego is bringing the incumbents and the challengers together in a live forum to ask them the best questions that their readers can think up. You’ll get to hear their thoughts, question them on tough issues and mingle with them afterwards.
It will be held on Thursday, May 20th, 7pm-9pm, and will be at Liberty Station, Corner of Dewey Rd. & Historic Decatur Rd., Bldg 202, Suite 205. Moderated by VOSD’s Emily Alpert, the event and parking are free. Although advance registration is not required, if you do plan to attend, sending a quick email to summer@voiceofsandiego.org will help ensure they have plenty of chairs.
Coffee Party to Stage Tour of San Diego’s Mega-Banks – May 21st
San Diego’s Coffee Party – which has a strong contingent in OB – is sponsoring a tour of sorts of four mega-banks in downtown San Diego. These are the banks that received bail-outs and who pay their CEO’s mega-bucks. Join the Coffee Party at 11:30 on Friday, the 21st of May, at the fountain at Horton Plaza, for this tour, as the new organization focuses on campaign finance reform and cleaning up Wall Street. Entries deadline for OB Exposed has been extended to Wed the 19th.
I just recieved some historic photos from a friend of a friend. His father opened the Safeway store in a building that our business occupied for fourteen years at 4905 Newport. Although I’ve known all along it was a Safeway I’ve never seen photos of it until now. They are seven classic shots 3 from the street, 3 inside including the cake cutting ceremony, and 1 from a farmers market down the street where Your Mamas Mug is. This is where Jack Massey was working before opening this store. In his sons letter to me he states this store was proposed to be the first Safeway to open in California, on the A & P concept in the East. The year was 39,40, or 41. If any body has more info on this store please let me know. Many thanks to Chuck Massey they are soooo awesome. Come check them out at this years OB Exposed!

We have just received an unconfirmed notice that Fox will be hosting a free BBQ at the Masonic Temple on Sat at 7 to show thanks to the community of OB for allowing them to film “Terriers” . If anyone can confirm this, please let us know. I’ve got to run right now and cannot do it myself for several hours. It’s not almost 9am Friday 5/21

It looks as if the BBQ is limited to folks who live on santa cruz….
you know, I’ve been trying my best to give the Terrier folks the benefit of the doubt here and say it’s cool and they’re a local production company, cut ’em slack, etc…. but seriously, what are they thinking? The OB exposed event has been publicized for quite some time. And they are going to throw a BBQ for only some residents on the same night in the same venue…??? That’s just lame. Somebody wasn’t thinking.
It will be fine Jon there not taking up much space.
Plus it might draw some of the locals to our event that might not have heard about it.

Oh that’s good to hear, and when I really think about it, you are right, it could be a good thing for the OB exposed event. The way I read it above, it just sounded more like a burden with taking up parking, etc… Thanks for explaining Pat. I will swing by at some point to check things out.
