OBComedy posterOB Comedy Celebrates Fourth Anniversary Show – April 9th

Ocean Beach Comedy celebrates its 4 year anniversary on Friday, April 9th at Winston’s in Ocean Beach. The show will be co-headlined by OBC founder Steven Kendrick, along with Michael Wendorf, featuring Jeff Bilodeaux, and hosted by Jesse Egan.

Headliner Steven Kendrick is known as the “founding father” of Ocean Beach Comedy, having started the show in early 2006. He is also a national touring comedian who has just returned from a tour of Texas, including appearances at SXSW in Austin and the Altercation Punk Comedy Festival.

Steven has worked with many big-name comics, including Ron White, Nick DiPaolo, Doug Stanhope, and has performed nationally and all over LA and San Diego. Co-headliner Michael Wendorf is rapidly becoming a fixture in the Southern California comedy scene, and was recently the winner of the Ocean Beach Comedy Competition.

Ocean Beach Comedy is proud to have been bringing the best comics in the business from near and far to perform every Friday night for over 4 years. In that time, the show has brought in local open-mic performers getting their feet wet, So Cal comics with a large regional following, and comics that have toured the country and the world, such as Tom Rhodes, Sean Rouse, Sam Tripoli, Joey “Coco” Diaz, Josh Wolf, Jimmy Shubert, Tom Hester, and more.

There is also now an open mic comedy show directly before Ocean Beach Comedy. From 6-7 pm, you can check out some young, eager, wacky, and talented new comics that are hoping to make it big. Anyone is welcome to perform, but the list is limited to the first 10 comics that sign up.

Winston’s in Ocean Beach is at 1921 Bacon Street. The show begins on Friday, April 9th at 7 pm for only $5. Tickets will be available at the door.

OB  Centric Holds Another “Swap O Rama Rama”

Back by extreme popular demand, OB Centrics is holding another “Swap O Rama Rama” this Friday, April 9th at 7pm.  The business at 4876 Santa Monica Avenue is hosting another clothing swap…  The idea here is: bring in all the good clothes you just don’t wear or are sick of, & swap them out with “new/used” with everyone else. Right now is the perfect time : spring has sprung!

All are welcome and if you bring a friend you are automatically entered to win a free massage (thank you thunderbird therapeutics!) This is a lot of much fun and a cheap way to spruce up the wardrobes… There will be treats, drinks, bonfire, live music, clothes, friends & good laughs… how does it get any better than that?

All the leftover clothes will be donated to local shelters. The drinks will be flowing & the clothes will be going… come play $4 @ door – includes first drink. Ccall us  if you have any questions… 619.222.4876.

Electric studio logoRock ’n’ roll academy opens doors in OB

Electric Music Studios has opened for business inside Ocean Beach’s famed Electric Chair Salon. The new rock ’n’ roll academy, designed for children ages 6-18, will be performance-based with private lessons and weekend band rehearsals with students who will also perform live concerts.

“With the economy the way it is, our massage, facial and waxing business is not what it used to be, so we decided to convert our Suite D into an affordable rock music academy for kids,” said owner Paul Bolton. “We’re also very fortunate to have some extremely talented teachers on board.”

The list of teachers includes Ocean Beach resident Mike Handforth, music director from High Tech High International. When not teaching, Handforth plays bass in The Queen’s Guard, Ocean Jazz Ensemble, the Brothers Gundersson and Barefoot Hockey Goalie.

Another teacher is Omar Lopez, who is currently studying music at San Diego Stae University and is a member of the B-Side Players. Ocean Beach resident Israel Maldonado is also an SDSU graduate who volunteers his time teaching music at Ocean Beach Elementary School. Maldonado is also a 2009 Point Loma Association Banner recipient, and former guitarist with Sol E Mar and Aqua Dulce. He now fronts his own band, The Israel Maldonado band.

Teaching keyboards is Kris Korsgaden, another SDSU student who is in the SDSU jazz studies program. Korsgaden is a pianist who has been playing piano since the age of 3.  The vocal teacher for the new rock ’n’ roll academy is Esjay Jones, who has just returned from the national touring band Stealing Love Jones. Jones has toured and worked with Evanescence, 3 Doors Down, Hoobastank, Fall Out Boy, The Violent Femmes and Jimmy Eat World.

Speaking of Winstons: I went to Drunk Poets Society for the very first time… had a pitcher of beer, heard many a rhyme. T’was a mix of poetry, rants and raves. There was even an Old Hermit named Dave. When Dave read the ‘news’, I nearly laughed till i cried. And wondered, who is this crazy, funny old guy?

That’s Dave Sparling, our local OB poet-humorist, who often makes comments to our blog, and who BTW just had an unsuccessful run for a Planning Board seat.

Will OB be left with yet another large vacant store? Rite Aide is on the verge of bankruptcy. See this:

Things haven’t been right at Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD) in quite a long time. Rite Aid’s biggest problem is that the drug store giant just doesn’t make money. Rite Aid has been losing money and is expected to have negative earnings for the foreseeable future. Add in that Rite Aid has only $150 million in cash and more than $6 billion dollars in debt and you can see why the outlook isn’t so rosy.

So, Joe, maybe Rite Aid’s closure will be just in time for CVS to open in the ‘old’ AppleTree. In a recent comment Gary said he had heard that CVS planned to open there once the local market closes – if it does in fact close.

Change any current plans you may have and go see the Comedy Show on Friday at Winston’s. I attended one a few months ago and whole heartedly laughed as Steven K. and Michael W. spun their unique humor round and round my brain. Seriously funny and well worth taking friends to see!!!!!!

I was so sad yesterday when I took my wife and dad down to OTH to get some biscuits and gravy, only to see it closed for filming.
I hope they don’t make a habit of filming on tuesdays, because that is the only day all three of us can line up for our favorite meal.
