Native OBceans Return With In-House Seafood Market for Fresh Fish for All

As we’ve reported, Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill, will open a second location in OB, in the Tower Two location. Blue Water founders, brothers Matt and Judd Braun return to their native Ocean Beach with this eatery, set to open Spring 2018. Locals, pondering whether there will finally be fresh fish for all at an OB market, will be happy as the new place will feature an enclosed dining patio and an in-house seafood market, which will retail fresh fish and fuel Blue Water’s casual menu. The Braun brothers often stock the market with their own fresh catch. The move signifies a new partnership with local restaurant development group Social Syndicate and the Braun bros. Roseville Jewish Story

There is a chapter about the Roseville section of Point Loma and its namesake Louis Rose, in Don Harrison’s “77 Miles of Jewish Stories.” Louis Rose was a visionary entrepreneur who realized the potential of buying land between Old Town and the San Diego Bay. There is a plaque honoring him near the water at Liberty Station, and one can also see Rose’s influence in Old Town. The visitor information center at the State Historic Park is located in the Robinson/Rose house, named after Rose and attorney James W. Robinson. Don Harrison’s book is his third book includes stories take place along the 77 miles of Interstate 8 in San Diego County, from Ocean Beach to the far end of East County, finishing at the Imperial County line. City Attorney Didn’t Expect Council Would Cancel STVR Hearing

City Attorney Mara Elliott says a memo that led city officials to cancel a long-awaited vote on vacation rental regulations was meant to aid rather than halt City Council action. The legal opinion issued last Wednesday surprised City Council members and seemed to imperil a City Council-initiated regulatory proposal some had hoped would end more than two years of policy paralysis. The memo, written by Deputy City Attorney Shannon Thomas, suggested two recommendations separately floated by City Councilmen Chris Ward, Mark Kersey, Scott Sherman and David Alvarez and Councilwoman Barbara Bry ran afoul of the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause, among other concerns. Panic set in, spurring Sherman to request that the vote be canceled. That wasn’t the outcome Elliott expected. Voice of San Diego

Open Air Roof to Be Installed at the Plunge in Mission Beach

With over 91 years of history, one of San Diego’s most iconic parks, The Plunge in Mission Beach’s Belmont Park, is entering a new era with a 29,330 square-foot transformation. OpenAire is now building an aluminum-framed retractable roof enclosure for The Plunge’s indoor swimming pool. The new curved glazed roof enclosure measures 104’ x 204’ in length with glass sidewalls over 39’ high providing a sunlit paradise as an extension of the popular beach. Opening the 10 large retractable roof panels in conjunction with the two glass overhead doors and motorized pivot windows allows cool ocean breezes to flow right through the building, yet offers indoor comfort with the push of a button should the ocean become angry. The enclosure features a brand-new, 25-foot-wide two-story mezzanine along its 204-foot length, which gives a pleasant place for swimmers to work out or relax while overlooking the pool in one direction and stunning ocean views in the other. Ocean Beach is known for its characters, and Dean Hollenbeck is one of our most endearing. Dean loves to walk… and talk! He has made countless friends on his meandering walks in Ocean Beach and the peninsula. At 89-years-old Dean somedays walks up to 16 miles… though it may take him the whole day depending on how many people he talks to. Ocean Beach Historical Society’s Kathy and Ray Blavatt filmed Dean on his O.B. adventures as he spoke with other interesting longtime OBceans, toured some of their homes, and  discussed their tales and histories of living in Ocean Beach.  Featured film guests include Flickie Dormer, Virginia Davis, Shoeshine Willie, Darlene the Garden Lady, and others. Pushed Out of Downtown Homeless Move to San Diego River and Balboa Park

Pushed out of downtown, homeless people are moving to the San Diego River, a population shift likely to create new problems this winter. This month, the San Diego River Park Foundation found 101 homeless camps in Mission Valley, the stretch of river nearest to downtown.  Last October, it counted just 56 camps in Mission Valley. The city has focused for months on getting homeless people off the streets downtown. It opened one city-run camp and plans to open others in coming months. But the River Park Foundation’s figures suggest one effect of the street-clearing is simply to move the people – and the city’s political and civic problems – from one part of San Diego to another. “You push a balloon on one side, it pushes out on the other side,” said Rob Hutsel, the River Park Foundation’s executive director. It’s not just the San Diego River that is seeing an influx of homeless people since enforcement efforts have ramped up downtown. The head of the Balboa Park Conservancy recently said the homeless population in the park doubled as the city stepped up enforcement and street cleaning downtown. Voice of San Diego

City Council to Meet on Short Term Vacation Rentals on Dec. 12th

It has been confirmed by Councilwoman Zapf’s office that the San Diego City Council will hold a hearing on short term rentals on December 12th at 10 AM at Golden Hall.

World Beach Games Coming to Mission Beach in 2019

The Association of National Olympic Committees is holding the 2019 World Beach Games in Mission Beach. That event — set for October 2019 in Mission Beach — will be smaller and less costly than expected even a year ago, they’ll report. And it will run six days instead of 10. 2,000 of the world’s best athletes in 15 non-Olympic sports (such as surfing, wall climbing and ocean canoeing), from potentially more than 40 countries will be represented, say leaders of the San Diego Exploratory Foundation. Pedestrian Found Dead Off I-8 in Midway

A person was found dead off westbound Interstate 8 in the Midway area Wednesday morning, and the investigation into the pedestrian’s death has caused a traffic backup in the area. The body discovery was reported shortly before 6 a.m. on the westbound side of I-8, near Taylor Street. Authorities said the unidentified person was struck by a vehicle, which stopped near the scene following the collision. 10News
