Remember that old Craftsman house on Voltaire Street in Ocean Beach that was possibly up for grabs for free? The one that will be demolished in order for the construction of the new, mixed-use, 2 story building approved recently by the OB Planning Board.
It’s located at 4921 Voltaire Street, 92107.
The one condition was the house had to be hauled away within a few months – with the caveat that the owner had not agreed to the whole deal yet.
Well, I just got off the phone with Kent Smith, the architect who is handling the new project coming in. He told me the owner does not want to have anything that could impede his timeline for the demolition.
But – Kent said if someone guarantees they could come and haul the house away within 30 days from today (10/6/17), he might be able to persuade the owner to give it away gratis.
At this point, the house will be demolished.

According to architect Kent Smith, the old foundation is “pretty poor”. And the flooring is of an old framed house. It has one bath and is 826 square feet.
Some members of the OB Planning Board believe it could be the very first craftsman building built in Ocean Beach. However, the current owner brought it before the San Diego Historic Review Board and they found nothing of historical significance.
Planned mixed-use building; design has incorporated the original porch, eave and columns into the new front. 2 residential units upstairs.

It’s run down for sure, but in the hands of the right contractor and in the hands of someone who refurbishes old homes and likes craftsman style homes — this old house has some potential! And for the price of moving it. The roof appears to be fairly new and some features on the interior and exterior are in good shape.

I agree, Gregg. Looks like two boxes that didn’t fit each other on top of one another. The colors are hideous – go along with the color of the place next door. Yuck!
