We Are All OB Locals ! We all pay taxes and pay rents and support OB. We all have personal problems. To use this forum to air yours is a bad way to do business. You criticize my business ethics with no truth and only opinions without the facts.
You can claim the deep pocket business men are shutting down the little guy! Well every business you mentioned are locally owned and most have operated here for over 20 years! For you to slander locally owned businesses for personal support against your cause is just out and out low!
Every business owner had to start somewhere, myself included. I’m sorry that you feel that I took advantage of your situation. At no time have I done so.
Also, your previous false allegation about me suggesting that I had something to do with a complaint about your business next to Winston’s and why you had to relocate is ludicrous, and a slanderous out-and-out lie ! You told this to many people when I first opened my business in September and slandered me just for your personal gain and to pass the buck with out checking the facts first.
Moreover, your alleged notice to move from Winstons last Spring was months before OB Kanobes even opened. We opened in September, 2009. You were relocated in June of 2009.
Most “conscientious” OBecians know that a much closer competitor opened a new kitchen window to the sidewalk “less than 50ft from your previous location”, (basically next to you) and, is open late-night with a new improved to-go kitchen. So go figure…..
So, obviously you feel different, so lets agree to disagree and move forward. I wish only the best for you and your future endeavors.

We never said it WAS you that got us kicked out of Winstons. We simply listed the group of businesses that other people told us it may have been. There are many other businesses that make sense to have complained, not just you.
We NEVER blamed you for what happened there. We moved, and worked hard to establish the new spot.
Now, moving on from that, how is it right for your hot dog cart to come in and take the spot we have been promoting and working hard to build clientele for the last 9 months? I am not the only person who thinks the whole situation is shady. Nobody told us what was going on until you had already started building in our spot! We went 6 or 7 months through the slow season not making any money until recently, and now that we’re finally doing well again, here comes OB Kanobe? You can’t say that’s not at least a LITTLE underhanded… We did not even have a chance to bid for the location. I would have happily negotiated a new lease, but didn’t have the opportunity.
So Bob, what do you expect us to tell our customers when they ask us about “our” new patio being constructed? I’m not going to lie to them and say it’s ours. I’m not going to promote the new cart that will be there. It’s not our cart! The only thing I’m telling people is the truth: You are taking our spot. What is a lie about that?
Nobody was ever slandered, and I never spoke more than a few words about you until all this happened.
I know that “business is business” and all, but seriously, we work hard at what we do. We go to school. We live in town. It’s ridiculous that we are not even afforded the opportunity to negotiate a way to stay in the spot we have established over the last 9 months. Why didn’t you just put your stand there in the first place? Why did you waste so much time and money building it at Apple Tree?
Here’s your chance to tell the facts. How did you end up with our spot? That’s the issue here. You know we have been there selling hot dogs. You drive down Newport every night we are out there and stare at us. You see us doing well, and I understand you want part of the action, but this is not the right way to do it. Everyone wants to play dumb, and act like nobody knew we were even there, but it wasn’t a secret.
You don’t even seem to care that you’re essentially tearing our existence right out from under us. You should have a little compassion in this situation! I don’t know if you realize this, but if we don’t find a new spot, we won’t have any income. We have worked hard to support ourselves and provide some seriously tasty dogs, but this is making things ridiculous….
Like I said, I know you want in on the hot dog “action,” but come on, compete fairly. Our spot should have been our spot, not up for bids to friends with no chance for us to counter-offer. At least the Litticker’s Tamale cart gets to stay, but what about all the Farmer’s Market people that are losing their livings as well? I just got back from the market, and there were a lot of people very upset about what’s going on.

Ryan, one thing I do not like or is appreciate your fabrication from the truth. The truth and fact is that you directly accused me in front of someone that I had something to do with having your cart removed from Winstons.

Furthermore you told this to many others before checking your facts and compiling your so-called hit list that you just mentioned! How many others on that list did you want to blame besides me? This is not fair play on your part from the get-go, and, your alleged accusations began the day we opened our doors in September on Cable Street as OB Kanobes, King of Beach City Hot Dogs.
A few weeks ago my best friend went to your stand on Sat night because she wanted a vegan dog since we were not open. She not only listened to your false accusations, but also corrected you! She enjoyed the vegan dog but not your untrue comments…..
After your claim was mentioned to her, you still continued to make these false accusations to the public at large.
I believe you should should be a gentleman about this and look at it for what it is.
You just admitted in your last statement here on the blog that “you listed a group of businesses” that could be the culpert to your situation, however you apparently used me as the scapegoat when I opened my business, harming my business, and, now you say you didn’t do it! Who was underhanded from the get go here? If so, why did you compile this so call list? So you can be vindictive about it and spread rumors or just dream about it!? This is not fair play, …
The way I see it, this is a direct contradiction of your statements here as you apparently just acknowledged that you had a list.
Why did you fabricate these lies and innuendos to hurt my business when in fact you had no evidence to prove your case what so ever? Look closer around you to see who else may have opened a new food business around you about the same time you did! (there were a few) That would be your competition. Then look to see if all your ducks are in place.
People that are serious about running a business secure themselves with a lease or a firm commitment which apparently you failed to secure. Thi was your obligation to protect your asset.
Furthermore, I did not undermine your business. You undermined mine “initially” with false statements last year when I opened OB Kanobes in September, 2009 by making false statements and innuendos covering up the truth, and I can prove it!
You were initially underhanded and people saw it for what it was.! Perhaps that is why you were not asked to be involved with the new Lessor. I was invited into this situation and secured it, and you were not. That is business.
Seriously, what about the other 95% of locals in OB, Pt Loma and Sunset Cliffs that work and sleep normal hours and can’t get a hot dog during the day from you, or, at lunch time, or, on Saturday or Sunday from your part-time operation. What about the kids after school that want a hot dog? What about the simple and friendly folks and businesses that are here when most of the businesses are open during the day.
Perhaps if you were a more of a full time business, rather than a few hours a week that catered specifically to the bar, and, the late night crowd, things may have been different for you. You had a few years to figure this out. You obviously declined and were complacent and now want to be dirty and lie your way through this. Take it like a man and learn from this. Perchance I would even help you and go out of my way to help you find a location, now that is personal!

Pretty sure they would be open during the day but the tamale cart pays for rent during the day and the hot diggity dog cart was open at night. Thats why they didn’t set up for farmers market during the day. Also pretty sure both are students in college.
WOW dude, you sound like you’re on something!!!! And you might not want to use this venue to rant and rave like you are, it looks pretty bad on you and your stand. Plus I have eaten at your stand, and the dogs are not very good.

With all this fighting , I think I will go to Pink’s and ignore the dogs in OB. The owners at Pink’s ALWAYS have a smile on their face !!
Once again make a good product, give good service find a decent location and ” they will come”
South Beach is a good example people fly to San Diego from all over the country come to SB right from the airport to get a fish taco. Hodads the same thing.
Just put out the BEST product you can and work like hell promoting it. If you are NOT RIGHT where you want to be rest assured that if you have a good Hot Dog people will walk a block or two….
The bitching , moaning and crying from both sides is getting to be tiresome.
Why not meet at the flagpole and have a grilled hot dog fight ??
The OB Rag has now given both sides in this “war” their opportunity to speak their side. Hopefully, the air has been clarified if not resolved. Unless there is an influx of new comments, we here at the editor’s desk will carefully monitor any more statements either from Ryan Schillinger or Robert Allen. Thanks for using our blog for what we intended: a community forum for Ocean Beach residents, businesses and visitors.
I decided not to eat hotdogs from OBkanobe long ago. Way over priced!

Seriously though, I have no allegiance to either place and I think they’re both in danger of hurting their reputation by openly attacking and accusing each other of nefarious deeds in public. I hope that this resolves itself quickly and that both businesses are able to land on their feet and do well for themselves. Tough situation for all involved.
Let’s just get rid of all the carts and allow vendors to sell raw dogs and condiments by the beach where for 50 cents you can toast a weenie yourself at a fire ring. That certainly would generate enough cash to maintain the rings!
I think I’m going to open up a late night PB & J stand with two kinds of bread. This hot dog business is wayyy to complicated for me!!!
Yes that sounds great, with fresh bread, not the week or two old and no jelly from the local cafe.
Did they make an agreement? I saw the cart in the lot last night. It was a nice thing to see but I wasn’t in the mood for a dog. Sorry!
No, that was our last weekend in that spot. Since we were not given proper notice until AFTER the new cart was built, we were allowed to stay until the 21st of February. We already secured a new spot and will continue to serve tasty hot dogs!
R, That is great that you have a new spot , I know you will do just great. The real OB guys and gals know how we support the little guy. Best of luck.
