New photos of the suspect in a fatal knife attack that occurred in Ocean Beach last June 22nd have been released by San Diego County Crimestoppers.
Walter “Ras” Riley was found with multiple stab wounds on a sidewalk on Bacon Street near Newport Avenue around 12:30 a.m. on June 22. Riley, 65, died from his injuries at UC San Diego Medical Center.
A man believed to be the suspect was captured by the camera at a local business off Newport Avenue, just moments before the attack happened, police said. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and dark colored pants.

San Diego homicide investigators said the attack appeared to be unprovoked. Riley and the suspect appeared to have had a conversation before the attack, officials said.
There’s an unspoken fear among some OB observers that this attack on an African-American man for no apparent reason follows a pattern of similar attacks across the country by white supremacists on Black men.
Meanwhile, the release of these photos has both positive and negative aspects. First, why weren’t these photos realized earlier – they’re much better than those released right after the attack. But now that we have a clearer image of the suspect, perhaps his arrest can be hastened. However, the release of the images means San Diego Police are no closer to solving this tragic and scary case than they were 3 months ago.
