Here’s an update on Ocean Beach businesses and projects – in a photo gallery. Who’s new and what’s the status of upcoming merchants, storefronts and development projects.

Voltaire Street

Let’s begin with Voltaire Street which doesn’t get a lot of attention.

Car’s Jars

Car’s Jars at 4161 Voltaire had their big opening in July. Kelsey said they’ve been an online business for 3+ years…

Here’s their menu (click on image for larger version – Kelsey says it changes weekly):

The Upper Voltaire Project

Yes, the Upper Voltaire development has seen some progress after months and even years.  It was a giant hole in the ground one year ago. It’s the 28-unit project called the Upper Voltaire Mixed Use – situated on that one-acre triangular-shaped lot along Voltaire Street (where Dominos once stood) just west of Wabaska, overlooking Nimitz Boulevard below.

If one peaks over the construction fence, you can see the lot is beginning its transformation into a site for 28 two and three storied townhouses, and half a dozen retail units in the project, which is being managed by Mike Stevens.

Here’s what it looked like exactly one year ago:

New Design Company at Voltaire and Catalina

Dawson Design Group

Elka Yoga

Elka Yoga & Wellness Center has moved into the former catering company location.  They claim they offer “donation based yoga classes”. Check out what the details are.

People’s Veggie Restaurant Getting Ready

People’s Organic Market is about to open their vegetarian restaurant.

Looking through the window ….

Newport Avenue Area

Moving south to the Newport Avenue commercial area, we find there has been some changes ….

Ocean Beach Plaza

The old structure has been totally removed and grading has progressed to the point you czan see in the photo.

Newly Seeded Thistle Has Seen Growth

Formerly the San Diego Bay Flower Company, and across from the Post Office, this place has taken on new life and a new name, Thistle – Garden – Floral – Home.

The old inside looks pretty much the way it used to. It’s been here in one name or another for 17 years.

Ocean Beach Hardware Still Standing

Contrary to any rumors they’d be closing by the end of the year – OB Hardware still going strong. Check them out – the good folks there actually help their customers out.

OB Beans BusyOn the day this reporter walked through OB Beans, it was charged up.

Former Hookah Store Still Empty

Mad Munch Grilled Cheezer Co. Getting Ready to Open

Here’s their menu:

They still have some prep work to do.

Good to see lots of small scale businesses doing well. Where is the Mad Munch going to be located?

Across Newport from the Antique Center.

I’ve always liked hanging out on Voltaire more than Newport. Many memories of Tilted Stick to Lucy’s and back to the Stick and Lucy’s again. Now a lot of cool things are going up.

Dont forget the pubs, bars and Peace Pies along upper Voltaire. Also the little strip mall with dog grooming and dry cleaners.

Some one suggested that Voltaire could be a green historic/commercial zone (first? in the country).

I love the idea.

Thanks, none of them are new; I would like to do a review of “little-known bars” in OB and include the Catalina Lounge and that other bar on Voltaire near Venice.

Love the Catalina Lounge but haven’t been there in a long time. Isn’t that really considered more Point Loma than OB?

Yes and no, as it depends what boundaries of OB one uses. Definitely not in the OB Planning Area, but it is in the 92107 area – which the OB Town Council uses. Would be sociologically interesting to survey the residents in that area to see where they think they live – OB or Pt Loma. What’s the name of that bar near the top of Voltaire’s hill west of Catalina?

I think you mean The Reunion, which sits at an angle to Voltaire, at 2205 Mendocino. Years ago, I used to go to the Catalina Lounge, when a group of Silvergate moms always went right after the PTA meeting.

Some friends brought over a couple of Cars Jars for a BBQ we were having.

WOW!!!!!

Super yummy! I was skeptical of the concept, but now I highly recommend you try them.

Well, it looks like Little Miss tasting room is out. Terrible. Target in, semi-locally owned tasting room out? BS!
