Several weeks ago I met someone that asked me if I had tried Hector’s.  He said it has been in Pt. Loma for years, and, to be honest, I had never even heard of it.  (It is located on Rosecrans as per address, but I was directed to take Locust Street and then Carlton to get to it. It is very close to West Marine, and it is easy to miss because it is on the back of the parking lot of the Mail Boxes Express.)

The person that told me about Hector’s said that he makes the best breakfast burrito in town, and has an excellent homemade salsa. I was going to try the restaurant out with Irene but she became ill so I asked Hitomi if she would like to go with me. (Leon – don’t worry. Irene will be back!).

Parking was not a problem; and there is one handicapped parking place almost at the front door.  The first thing that we saw when we went into the restaurant was a stand-up sign for a “Vegetarian Quesadilla”. It consisted of cheese, tomatoes, onions and bell pepper and guacamole and came with ½ pint of beans and rice.  The cost was $7.95 plus tax.

When one walks into Hectors the kitchen is on the left. But you order from the counter which is just to the right of the kitchen.  I asked if they had a menu but was told they did not; everything is on signs or posters on the walls.  It takes some doing to read everything – (as evidenced by the pictures I have sent my editor).

I already knew I was going to try the breakfast burrito, but for Hitomi, with limited English, it was quite a chore.  I knew that she liked fish taco’s and when I saw the special on the beams of the restaurant I suggested she try that. I think she was relieved to find something she was familiar with.

I asked her what she wanted to drink and they had “Mexican Coke” listed on the menu.  I am not sure what the difference is between that coke and the “American Coke” we usually purchase, except that it was coke in a bottle,  marked “Hecho en Mexico”, and not eligible for recycling.  I ordered an ice tea – which, by the way, was not on the menu, and received a bottle of Kirkland green tea, diet, with citrus flavor.  I was not given any ice with it, but when I asked for a glass of ice it was given with a smile.

Hitomi’s fish taco special with rice ($4.25) was very tasty.  The outside of the fish was crunchy; the inside was nice and soft.  It was covered with pico de gallo, and when she added Hector’s homemade salsa it was just what she wanted.  (The salsa is very good, but served in a plastic squeeze bottle, so she did not receive some of the chunks of tomato she would have liked.)  The rice was served in a Styrofoam cup and was tasty, but still needed a little salsa for zip.

In a way I am sorry that I ordered the breakfast burrito and not one of the typical Mexican meals, because it was not what I usually get when ordering a breakfast burrito.  It was packed with potatoes, eggs, cheese and bacon, but did not have any “Mexican” seasonings in it. It was, putting it bluntly, rather bland and needed a lot of salsa to make me think I was eating something Mexican.  There is no question that it was big and packed , but the flavor of Mexico was just not there, which I would expect in a Mexican restaurant.  The cost was $6.35.

The food was served wrapped in yellow wax paper; plastic knives and forks were placed on a napkin.  The counter girl brought the food to our  table. Our total bill, with the two drinks came to $15.60 and I left a tip in the tip jar on the counter.

So the big question comes up again – would I go back?

I might to try a typical Mexican meal, but I would not go back for the breakfast burritos.  I also would not go back during the hot weather because the dining area, although having two fans in it, is very warm.  I might go back for “take-out” – as three other customers did while we were there, but without a menu at hand it is, at best, “iffy.”
