Clean-up for Dr Ehmann Slated for Sunday the 8th

Another clean-up by volunteers of Dr. Ehmann’s house is planned for Sunday, November 8th.  The event will be from 11 am to 2 or 3 pm, at 4021 Orchard, near Catalina.

Women’s Clothing Swap – Nov. 8th

Here’s an exciting chance for women to swap out clothes not worn anymore for other clothes to wear.  Save money, promote reduce, reuse and recycle at OBCentric, an art gallary and gift shop at 4876 Santa Monica. Come over on Sunday the 8th from 2 to 6 pm. There will be live art, live music, cocktails and yummy treats.

Seagull shot with arrow found in OB

San Diego County Animal Control officers found a seagull in Ocean Beach Thursday morning, Oct. 29th, alive with an arrow in its head, 10News reported.10News obtained pictures that show a 4-inch arrow shot directly into the head of the Western gull. An X-ray showed the arrow spanning more than the length of the bird’s skull. Authorities said if the arrow was aimed a little higher, the gull would have been killed.

The arrow has since been removed, and the gull is now safe and expected to survive. It underwent surgery at San Diego’s Project Wildlife.  “I think humans are the worst predator a lot of these animals face,” said Gina Taylor, of Project Wildlife. A $3,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible in the gull shooting.

Newport News and Rumors

Caio Bella to open.

Ciao Bella, the restaurant under construction at 4953 Newport, will be open in 2 to 3 weeks, we were told by someone who seemed to be in the know.   The medical marijuana dispensary that has taken up the old OB Hardware building will also be selling hemp products.

The clothing boutique – where the old tanning salon was – appears much closer to being finished.  And, the old Retro place will be opening a hydroponic store on or around December 1st. They’ll sell kits and tools, the rumors are.

Finally, what’s that new rocky island off the coast of Ocean Beach?

TV Series “Terriers” Rumored to be Coming Back to OB in January

Ted Caplaneris, the owner of the Old Town House Restaurant, told me that “Terriers” – the TV series filmed in Ocean Beach – is supposed to return to our quaint coastal village in January 2010.  That’s the rumor.  Ted might know, as a segment was filmed in his Newport Avenue eatery back last summer.

The series, about two knuckle-brained private investigators, has been picked up, and 13 episodes will be shot – ostensibly in OB.  The show is to be on the air in April of next year. The series includes an “Ocean Beach Police Department” whose decals have been handed out to favorites in the community.

They filmed in Ted’s restaurant for 12 hours, he said, for only 3 minutes worth of the show.  Ted pointed to the front corner where the filming took place. His wife, Kathy, was an extra.  He learned a lot, he said, in how a television production actually happens.  With the money they paid him for use of his place, he’s buying a refrigerator. Chill deal.

School Board member John DeBeck Joins OB Historical Society in celebrating OB Elementary’s 100th year anniversary – Nov. 19th

The Ocean Beach Historical Society presents:  “The Ocean Beach Elementary School Celebrates Its 100 Year Anniversary” and features School Board member John DeBeck, and other alumni of the school. Come rejoice the school’s history from 1909 to 2009, Thursday, Nov. 19th, 2009 at 7 p.m. It will be held at PL United Methodist Church, 1984 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., in O.B.

John deBeck will help us celebrate the 100th anniversary of our award winning “2008 California Distinguished School.”  He  will be joined by many Ocean Beach Elementary Alumni of all ages as they share their memories and the history of the school!

Chinese Commies Invade OB

It finally happened. Chinese Communists finally invaded OB – after decades of rumors that they were massing on our border – and they went directly to OB People’s Food Co-op. See here for invasion details.

Critical Mass Hit OB on Oct. 30th

On Friday October 30th, Critical Mass came to OB (again). Critical Mass is the mass of bicyclists who ride through the streets of San Diego the last Friday night of every month.  They meet at the fountain at the Center of Balboa Park at 6to 7pm. Here is a quote from an article “Critical Mass an art Protest”:

Critical Mass is an idea that started in San Francisco in 1992 and was originally called Commut Clot. The idea was to show that they are no longer going to take the effects that automobile transportation has on the environment and the world. In order to emphasize this point the riders would take to the streets clogging up lanes, making commuters frustrated and protesting live on the streets in a disorganized but brilliant fashion.

Soon after its conception in the U.S., Critical Mass begun to catch like wild fire and eventually spread to over 325 cities world wide. Even Budapest has Critical Mass twice a year where they have reached numbers of 80,000 participants. Wherever and whenever it started, Critical Mass is definitely catching on in a growing environmentally conscious culture.

Fast forward to Oct. 30, 2009. …. Riding up to the event there are hundreds, maybe even thousands of participants huddled around the fountain at the Center of Balboa Park. … (Editor: go here for the remainder of the article.)

The OB Rag staff would like to thank Cafe Bella for some free PR for our blog.  Doug Porter in his latest OB coffee review, had called the coffee stand at the corner of Voltaire and Bacon “best coffee in OB”.  The management then put up signs making the announcement.  (We had to chuckle and then nudge the barista working at the time during a recent visit that they had misnamed our blog by initially calling it “OBRag.gov” . She very graciously corrected it.)
