Women’s Clothing Swap – Nov. 8th

Here’s an exciting chance for women to swap out clothes not worn anymore for other clothes to wear.  Save money, promote reduce, reuse and recycle at OBCentric, an art gallary and gift shop at 4876 Santa Monica. Come over on Sunday the 8th from 2 to 6 pm. There will be live art, live music, cocktails and yummy treats.

Seagull shot with arrow found in OB

San Diego County Animal Control officers found a seagull in Ocean Beach Thursday morning, Oct. 29th, alive with an arrow in its head, 10News reported.10News obtained pictures that show a 4-inch arrow shot directly into the head of the Western gull. An X-ray showed the arrow spanning more than the length of the bird’s skull. Authorities said if the arrow was aimed a little higher, the gull would have been killed.

The arrow has since been removed, and the gull is now safe and expected to survive. It underwent surgery at San Diego’s Project Wildlife.  “I think humans are the worst predator a lot of these animals face,” said Gina Taylor, of Project Wildlife. A $3,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible in the gull shooting.

Newport News and Rumors

Newport News 016-rest-sm

Caio Bella to open.

Ciao Bella, the restaurant under construction at 4953 Newport, will be open in 2 to 3 weeks, we were told by someone who seemed to be in the know.   The medical marijuana dispensary that has taken up the old OB Hardware building will also be selling hemp products.

The clothing boutique – where the old tanning salon was – appears much closer to being finished.  And, the old Retro place will be opening a hydroponic store on or around December 1st. They’ll sell kits and tools, the rumors are.

Finally, what’s that new rocky island off the coast of Ocean Beach?

December 5, 2009, OB Holiday Parade

The annual OB Holiday Parade starts at 5:05 from Sunset Cliffs Blvd & heads down Newport Ave.

TV Series “Terriers” Rumored to be Coming Back to OB in January

Ted Caplaneris, the owner of the Old Town House Restaurant, told me that “Terriers” – the TV series filmed in Ocean Beach – is supposed to return to our quaint coastal village in January 2010.  That’s the rumor.  Ted might know, as a segment was filmed in his Newport Avenue eatery back last summer.

tvpilot01

The series, about two knuckle-brained private investigators, has been picked up, and 13 episodes will be shot – ostensibly in OB.  The show is to be on the air in April of next year. The series includes an “Ocean Beach Police Department” whose decals have been handed out to favorites in the community.

They filmed in Ted’s restaurant for 12 hours, he said, for only 3 minutes worth of the show.  Ted pointed to the front corner where the filming took place. His wife, Kathy, was an extra.  He learned a lot, he said, in how a television production actually happens.  With the money they paid him for use of his place, he’s buying a refrigerator. Chill deal.

Chinese Commies Invade OB

It finally happened. Chinese Communists finally invaded OB – after decades of rumors that they were massing on our border – and they went directly to OB People’s Food Co-op. See here for invasion details.

Critical Mass Hit OB on Oct. 30th

On Friday October 30th, Critical Mass came to OB (again). Critical Mass is the mass of bicyclists who ride through the streets of San Diego the last Friday night of every month.  They meet at the fountain at the Center of Balboa Park at 6to 7pm. Here is a quote from an article “Critical Mass an art Protest”:

Critical Mass is an idea that started in San Francisco in 1992 and was originally called Commut Clot. The idea was to show that they are no longer going to take the effects that automobile transportation has on the environment and the world. In order to emphasize this point the riders would take to the streets clogging up lanes, making commuters frustrated and protesting live on the streets in a disorganized but brilliant fashion.

Soon after its conception in the U.S., Critical Mass begun to catch like wild fire and eventually spread to over 325 cities world wide. Even Budapest has Critical Mass twice a year where they have reached numbers of 80,000 participants. Wherever and whenever it started, Critical Mass is definitely catching on in a growing environmentally conscious culture.

Fast forward to Oct. 30, 2009. …. Riding up to the event there are hundreds, maybe even thousands of participants huddled around the fountain at the Center of Balboa Park. … (Editor: go here for the remainder of the article.)

Cafe Bella PR Rag 002-sm

Thanks Cafe Bella for the PR

The OB Rag staff would like to thank Cafe Bella for some free PR for our blog.  Doug Porter in his latest OB coffee review, had called the coffee stand at the corner of Voltaire and Bacon “best coffee in OB”.  The management then put up signs making the announcement.  (We had to chuckle and then nudge the barista working at the time during a recent visit that they had misnamed our blog by initially calling it “OBRag.gov” . She very graciously corrected it.)

Aha! Nancy Casady and People’s Food management will talk to Chinese Communists but not to local commies.

People’s Food is the closet thing to socialism in OB. Get it? “People’s” – ?? I could also call the Post Office socialist, not to mention the public school communistic and marxist.

Finally someone who “gets it.” We’ve lived too long in OB under the oppressive thumb of cheap postage, vegetarian food and indoctrinizing text books! We need more freedom-loving businesses like Starbucks and Jack in the Box to move in! It’s time for corporate America to finally rise up against the oppression of (so called) mom & pop stores.

“It starts with growing the dirt,” Casady said. “Once you have the proper nutrients in the soil, the plants are healthier. They have more nutrients in them and you do not have to be reliant upon fossil fuels.”

So, no sort of farm equipment is used that runs on fossil fuels?

“The market stays away from fossil fuels by only offering organic products, Casady said. The growing process is what makes organic food sustainable.”

Don’t those big trucks that deliver all that organic food to Peoples throughout the day still run on some kind of fossil fuel too? I haven’t noticed anything that would point out otherwise like the smell of vegetable oil in the air from their exhaust pipes and so forth. I’m just trying to understand how that aspect (the delivery of said foods) could be considered part of a “green” philosophy. Am I missing something here?

I think the point is those trucks don’t have to go as far, so they use less fuel.

We just got home from seeing “Men who stare at goats” in the theater. If you would like to forget all your troubles and laugh for a good hour or more, I highly recommend you go see this one. George Clooney and Ian McGregor were truly funny and Kevin Spade prortrayed a real ass wipe this time.

I hear tickets before noon are only $6 at AMC….try Fandango.com for showtimes and theater rates.

A big “Thanks!” and “You rock!” to everyone headed out to Mr. Ehmann’s house this weekend, and those who were there with us (and long after some of us like me) last weekend…Christina and I can’t make it out this Sunday, though our commitment to the good doctor’s cause is still there. As we’d said, we’ve talked to someone who may turn out to be our ‘angel investor’ in this project – please post up or let me know at pimpshackdave at gmail on any other events going on at Robert’s house – we’d like to get our guy in to take a look, as he may have access to some tradesmen who can volunteer time for some other much-needed projects like plumbing repairs.

Interesting to follow the updates on the ongoing changes to the Newport business district – thanks to Frank or whoever else is contributing on that front.

Cool piece on People’s and lol @ hardnose – and I don’t say lol, ever. I’ve been impressed with the developing SDNN site, there was a really well-researched, well-written, and well-rounded piece on aquaculture, or ‘fish farming,’ on the front page when I swung by this morning…with the disastrous online fishwrap revamp I can only hope more traffic gets driven toward alternative local news sites.

I saw the Critical Mass folks come through town a few months back – was sitting out on the patio at Blue Parrot, probably watched a crowd of a thousand or more roll through, took fifteen minutes or more for them to pass. Cool stuff.

Thanks Val and crew for the blog shout-out! The Rag a government entity? Gotta laugh at that!

So, this guy Sinh Tho Nguyen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZqlWI9ZIqw
Is walking across America to honor US veterans. He should be arriving in OB around 3pm to complete his trip. Unfortunately I can’t be here, but it would be cool to go cheer him on. Rumor has it there will be a group gathering around Newport and Ebers to join him on the final leg of his walk.

Yes, the music in the video is a bit cheesy, but c’mon, the dude has walked across the entire country in a pair of freakin’ crocs!

Sorry I couldn’t reply. Had a birthday party to attend in Temecula. Drove up there in a limo courtesy of a good friend, drank a bunch of wine and some smuggled beers. Had so much fun I ended up discussing politics and religion with my dumb-ass Republican roommate in the wee hours of the morning. It ended with me nailing him in the head with a bag of potato chips and calling him a fascist asshole. Temecula sure was nice though.

Sarah Palin continues to peddle her special brand of crazy:
Noting that there had been a lot of “change” of late, Palin recalled a recent conversation with a friend about how the phrase “In God We Trust” had been moved to the edge of the new coins.

“Who calls a shot like that?” she demanded. “Who makes a decision like that?”

She added: “It’s a disturbing trend.”

Unsaid but implied was that the new Democratic White House was behind such a move to secularize the nation’s currency.

Except one teeny, tiny detail:

But the new coins – concerns over which apparently stemmed from an email chain letter widely circulated among conservatives – were commissioned by the Republican-led Congress in 2005 and approved by President Bush. ht/ barbmd@dkos

I wanted to let folks know that my buddy’s Led Zeppelin tribute band “Dazed & Confused” will be performing an “un-ledded” show at the Farmers Market this Wednesday (11-11-09) from 5:30 til 7:00. They will be doing a lot of Zep’s acoustic numbers. Sitting in with Jason & Andy will be Kenny James, Annie Rettic, Mike Stoltz and others…it should be pretty cool!

OB’s Restaurant Walk was last night. How was it? Anyone care to tell?

Reply

jon November 11, 2009 at 8:41 am

It was a lot of fun. But not nearly enough time to make it to every stop. My favorites of the night were the Vine with yummy ribs and cheap (priced) wine. BBQ House never disappoints, and they gave very generous portions of meat, chicken wings, cole slaw and beans. Sunshine CO. was handing out .25 cent drafts! Even Stone Pale Ale! We also enjoyed Bud’s Ice Cream who had root beer floats. And it was really fun to see the Elsbree House. They had a band playing in their living room, a nice lady making little crepes, and hot cider (grog?). I was bummed I didn’t make it onto the trolley to check out any Voltaire stops, but it seemed like many of the host restaurants were closing up early around 8 and we didn’t want to chance getting all the way over there to find a bunch of places had stopped serving.

Here’s some news.

The Old Townhouse was the only business that did not tell Terriers to go away. now that the series has been picked up for 13 weeks, the local businesses in OB are calling Terriers to invite them to film.

Terriers is thinking that it is best to stick with those who did not poo-poo them in the beginning.

I hope they stick to this, and the Old Townhouse prospers. OBceans are just like everyone else it seems, especially when it comes to business.
