Biden’s de Man

Presumptive Presidential candidate Barack Obama announced his choice of Vice President very early this morning. I was just getting in from a poker game (thanks for the money, gang) when the ObamaPhone ™ starting flashing red and beeping like crazy. And there it was….the big news….Vice President Biden.

I find it ironic that none of the blowhard east coast reporters covering this announcement got the significance of the fact that the phone call came at….wait for it…. THREE AM. (Remember the Hillary AD?????)

In any case, the pundits are saying all the usual things.

The GOP’s inside guy at the Associated Press wrote: The candidate of change went with the status quo. In picking Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate, Barack Obama sought to shore up his weaknessinexperience in office and on foreign policy…He picked a 35-year veteran of the Senate–the ultimate insider…The Biden selection is the next logistical step in an Obama campaign that has become more negative…” (Emphasis added)

The Huffington Post’s Julian E. Zelizer got top billing for his argument that Biden would be an effective attack dog to go after the Republicans: Biden’s quick verbal skills can be an asset for Democrats, and they should risk giving him room to speak his mind. The fact is that Democrats have not had a good “attack dog” as their vice presidential nominee for a long time. Just think of 2004, when Senator John Edwards sat there in a televised debate with his polished smile as Vice President Cheney systematically eviscerated his record and the Democratic Party in general.

Meanwhile, over at Wonkette, the comments were a bit snarkier, as usual. My favorite: Get Biden my favorite German tavern sign, “Be sure brain is engaged before putting mouth in motion,” and wish them luck. Electing a black president is going to be really tough work. The oil companies will spend like sailors to elect McCain’t. After eight years of a guy who makes Warren Harding look like Thomas Jefferson, we need a break.

No word yet from the Obama/Biden camp about what they’re gonna do about the evangelicals who are praying for God’s wrath to fall upon the Thursday’s big Democratic rally at Mile High Stadium.
