OCEAN BEACH, CA.  News and views, community events, thoughts, musings – it’s all here.

This is OB Flashes – the OB Rag’s weekly Community Bulletin and Discussion Board.  Discuss anything that is bugging you, or exciting you, or of interest. Or just something you want to share with the rest of us. Do it in the comments section.

Not only that, if you or your buds are having a meeting or event you would like to inform the rest of us about, do so here. If you want to get rid of something, like an old working TV, do it here.

Open Thread for Discussion Right Here (in the comments)

Here is where you can say it – and say the way you would say it to your friends.

Point Loma Resident: Foul Smell Came From Naval Base

Originally posted September 10, 2009 / Channel 10 News

SAN DIEGO — There is more mystery concerning a foul smell reported last week in the Ocean Beach and Point Loma areas, 10News reported. The smell was reported last Thursday (Sept 3, 2009) afternoon, with many residents in Ocean Beach saying it smelled like natural gas. San Diego Gas and Electric received more than 500 phone calls and sent 25 technicians to check for

gas leaks. However, crews said they didn’t find any leaks, and the smell vanished after about 30 minutes. The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department also investigated and concluded the smell came from the San Diego River. They said low tides exposed decaying organic material, and that’s what people smelled.

Dr. John Ahlering, a 26-year Point Loma resident, disagreed and said he has smelled the river at low tide many times. “That’s sort of a distinct rotting vegetation smell, and this smelled like

natural gas,” he told 10News. Dr. Ahlering thinks the smell came from fuel storage tanks at Naval Base Point Loma, which are clearly visible from his house. He and his neighbors received a letter from the Navy saying it was starting demolition of the tanks. Ahlering said a tank was opened the day of the bad smell. “When they opened it, whatever residual fuel may have been in there probably dried out and vaporized, and gave us the smell,” said Ahlering. The letter from the Navy said the demolition of the tanks would result in air quality within the levels of their environmental assessment.

25th Anniversary of California Coastal Cleanup Day

It will be Saturday, September 19th, 2009 – 9am to 12noon. With less than two weeks until Coastal Cleanup Day, be one of the thousands of San Diegans to register for this countywide cleanup event, happening on Saturday September 19th. With nearly 80 cleanup sites from Oceanside to Tijuana and Ocean Beach to El Cajon, it’s easy to find a cleanup site in your community. Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to form volunteer teams, or just come alone for what is slated to be the largest volunteer event in California.

While the primary goal of Coastal Cleanup Day is to remove litter and prevent marine debris from taking a toll on underwater environments, there are many other great reasons to get involved in this single-day cleanup event. Each volunteer at Coastal Cleanup Day this year will get a free Belmont Park roller coaster ride pass, or a discounted ticket for unlimited rides all day! Scout troops who participate in the cleanup get colorful cleanup patches to add to their sash or vest. To add to the festivities, each cleanup site will have contests and raffles for great prizes, including SeaWorld, Hornblower, Birch Aquarium and SeaLife Aquarium passes.

Coastal Cleanup Day each year is coordinated locally by San Diego Coastkeeper and I Love A Clean San Diego. Here are your big-name sponsors: the San Diego County Board of Supervisors via Supervisor Greg Cox and Supervisor Pam Slater-Price, Think Blue, and City of San Diego Storm Water Department. Statewide support for the effort is provided by the California Coastal Commission and Whole Foods Market, with local assistance from the Sempra Energy Foundation, Allied Waste and many others.  There’s mo’ but ya got to look ’em up.

Please click here to register for a site near you. If you have any questions, first consult our FAQs page or contact Inland Site Coordinator Morgan Justice-Black of I Love a Clean San Diego, at (619) 291-0103 ext. 3003. Your Coastal Site Coordinator, Alicia Glassco of San Diego Coastkeeper, is at (619) 758-7743 ext. 125. With your support, we can ensure a clean, safe, and healthy coastline for all.

Sierra Club Presentation by OB’s Jim Bell

When: Thursday, 9/24/09, 6:00 PM. Please bring a healthy snack or beverage to share! Also, note that the facility does not have a kitchen, so please bring items that don’t require further prep and can be taken back afterwards.

Where: Sierra Club Chapter Office, 8304 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, #101, San Diego, CA 92111. The office entry is on the west side of the building.  Admission: FREE – To RSVP please click here

In his talk, Jim will show how the San Diego/Tijuana Region can gracefully transform its current non-sustainable economies and ways of life into economies and ways of life that are life-support sustaining and renewable energy, water and food self-sufficient. He will also show how we can achieve these goals at a lower cost than continuing our dependence on imported energy, water and food and in doing so eliminate most air and water pollution and all energy use related greenhouse gas emissions.  Contact: Jan Schalkwijk, CFA – (619) 269-0329.

This is a great post, you guys! Lots of news – and some good hints at music, too. What’s going on? Is the Rag going to become part of the OB music scene? Bravo, if you are.

For the march on Sept 20, is there any car pooling from OB? If so, leave info here.

Hey guys, I’m confused. The OBCentric grand opening is listed as Friday Sept. 17th? My calendar says the 17th is a Thursday. I hope it’s actually Friday because I would like to go to the OBHS meeting on Thursday.

Jon, that’s because you have the Roman calendar based on 12 months. We stuck with the Maya calendar and it says the world ends tomorrow! Oh, geez! (thanx jon for having watchful eyes that are connected to yer brain.)

Damnit! I thought we had until 2012! What happens? Let me guess….Border sewage takes over and chokes out all life on earth? Don’t say we didn’t try to warn you…

Reply

Frank Gormlie September 15, 2009 at 9:33 am

That’s because you stuck with the main Mayan calendar. We went with the minority report. And it says we’re f*cked!

Reply

doug porter September 15, 2009 at 9:56 am

yes, molly, we are working on getting more music in our calendar. part of the problem here was waiting for the switch in format to happen. now it’s happened and I don’t have any more excuses for putting it off…. oh, wait!…surf’s up?….really?…oh, well, later.

OB Library news- Branch Manager Matt Beatty will be transferring to the MalcolmX/Valencia Park Library. Bet you didn’t know that Matt received a BA in Near East Studies from the University of Chicago and his MLS from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He was also a Branch Manager at the Free Library of Philadelphia. There’s time to say goodbye and wish him the best in his new position.

Hey Anna and everyone!

On the subject of libraries… or LIBERRIES, as some insist on calling them… there’s this chick that has taken on the task of reviewing all 36 libraries in the SDPL system. I don’t think she really gave herself time to immerse herself in each library. This should be obvious by reading her entry on the OB library.

Check it out <—- library employees are required to say this

Maybe you will feel compelled to comment on her website!

Music?…try piper Paddy Keenan at Holy Trinity Church (Sunset Cliffs and Brighton) this Sunday at 7:30 PM. This little church brings in some of the best Irish and English musicians to their tiny auditorium. A hidden gem right here in OB… in walking distance from your house. More info about tickets, etc:

Hey guys I’m building a site that is more along the lines of a “forum”. I’m not looking to compete with OB Rag; I’ve offered several times to help OB Rag create a forum here but never, ever, ever hear a peep from anyone. If anything I’m all about enhancing the whole community spirit we enjoy in our village.

So, me being not one to wait around for something to happen or a phone call/email to come through, I give you

It’s pretty bare-bones right now but you can create a profile, upload an image, pretty much set yourself up a little icon and stuff. It’s unmoderated for the moment and there’s no real “governing board”.

Have fun with it. I hope it sticks around.

Reply

PSD September 22, 2009 at 9:57 pm

I’m signed up, and hope many more will follow. I’d really prefer to see an online community BBS be an offshoot of the Rag and have the two intertwined, but failing that I’m glad to see there’s at least something going…rock on Bill!

Reply

Frank Gormlie September 23, 2009 at 8:24 am

PSD – I’m so glad you’re bored in OC. We want to keep comments on our site – here. Why move off-site to do the yakking? What’s wrong with here and now? We now have the “reply” function – which I know you PSD don’t like – but others do. So …?

Billraydrums – what’s wrong with using the OB Rag as a forum? I mean we can say anything here we want – I did check out your site – kind of bare bones and it looks like you want to use it for a lot more. That’s cool. But for plain ol’ discussion – why not just use this?

Reply

Bill Ray September 17, 2009 at 2:53 pm

This is a comment section. A forum is more adapted to “threaded discussions”. I’m only trying to help the community. Anyhow, it’s there, if you wanna use it, great. Thanks for replying!

We should have noted that yesterday was Mexican Independence Day – and it’s not Cinqo de Mayo – ! Mexico was finally able to kick the Spanish out – as we had to kick the British out. The 5th of May only celebrates the victory by Mexicans over the French when the French had imperial ambitions in their land. Some call it La Guerra de las Pastelas.

The OB Rag set records yesterday, Sept 16th. We had 1,919 visitors in a 24 hour period who checked out 3,273 pages. The main reason was the posting of Frank’s article by Doug on Daily Kos – a national blog. (Daily Kos gets a million visitors a day – we’re told.) For a while yesterday, Frank’s post was the Number One recommended article on Daily Kos. There’s a lot of national interest in the backlash against the right-wing and the extremist wingnuts and anytime people stand up to them – as they did in La Mesa the other night – people all over the country are interested. So, OBceans, you should know your community website is on the cutting edge of news such as this.

Been gone from OB for a while……took the annual pilgrimage to Burning Man…..and what an epic journey it was!!!!! Haven’t found the proper words to describe it all yet, but will be checking in from time to time with any cohesive thoughts that come to fruition.

I have often felt awe-inspired to call OB home and, now, to have found another place to call home, on a dry alkaline lake bed no doubt, is mind blowing! To have two locations on the planet where I feel totally free to expand, explore, create, and connect with the Source is almost more that I could ever have dreamed or imagined! Life is good.

……quick, cover me in dust and blast me with 70mph winds….ah, yes, the magic’s back in the air once again.

I’ve got so many epic and magnanamous moments racing through my brain….it’s difficult to pluck one out jat a time and begin. I will do my best to draft something today and get it to you.

This may sound ignorant on my part, and I know I could just f’n google it, but what exactly is a Hippie and what seperates them from the Yippees?

Reply

Frank Gormlie September 21, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Hippie is the term given the cultural rebels of the late Sixties to mid-Seventies. Hippies came in all sizes and shapes and colors. The Yippies were a collection of hippies turned political around the time of the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicag0. Y.I.P. was for the Youth International Party. They ran an actual pig for president that year. That was Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin and those guys. Of course it was at the 68 Convention that all hell broke loose and the police staged a riot of their own. (“Police riot” was the conclusion of the Skolnic Commission.)

Then there was the 1970 Yippie “Invasion” of La Jolla. Look that one up … won’t be on google – but try your fav blog.

Reply

Dave Gilbert September 21, 2009 at 4:48 pm

Thanks Frank! I didn’t know that about the Y.I.P., makes sense now.

Just trying to figure out why Shawn hates ’em so much. Reminds me of Eric Cartman on South Park who hates Hippies just as much…is it the drum circles?
