Little Miss Will Become 7th Beer Taproom on or near Newport
Apparently, yet another beer pub is moving into Ocean Beach on Newport Avenue.
In an article published Jan. 17th by Ian Anderson in the San Diego Reader, Little Miss Brewing has just announced that it has signed a lease for the space at 4861 Newport – and pending licensing – plans to open a satellite tasting room at that location. It will be in a 2000 square feet space and Little Miss will offer 20 taps.
The brewery company also plans to open a tasting room in Normal Heights. The 5-month old business, run by Jade and Greg Malkin, began their San Diego operations in a Miramar brewhouse, and soon found a success.
Little Miss has a general motif of World War II imagery. According to Anderson at the Reader:
Little Miss has fashioned its brand out of a World War II theme, decorating its brewery with old U.S. propaganda posters and using a bombshell design for both its tap handles and taster-flight trays.
“The idea with the other tasting rooms,” says Greg, “is sort of go with allied forces themes.” In other words, the Normal Heights location will take inspiration from war-era Great Britain, while the Ocean Beach spot will be designed around French imagery.
The Little Miss pub will become the seventh – that’s right, the seventh – brewery or beer tasting room to either open or that has plans to open on Newport Avenue or that is within a block of OB’s main commercial street.
The Malkin’s pub will be a couple storefronts down from Culture Brewing Co., across the street from Belching Beaver taproom, and just down the block from Helm’s at the corner of Newport and Cable; and of course Kilowatt Brewing Co. is opening its doors soon, right around the corner from Newport where the motorcycle shop used to stand; OB Brewery is down Newport, and Pizza Port is a block away. And yes, the new place will be across Newport from OB’s only winery, as well.
This news will certainly touch off another round of debate among OBceans on ‘just how many beer pubs can OB handle?’ We asked that question in March of last year – where the debate got rolling – and followed it up in August.

“The real goal is to focus on neighborhoods that are true neighborhoods,” says Jade’s husband and partner Greg Malkin. They focused their search around Ocean Beach and greater North Park hoping to attract regulars who live in the neighborhood, in addition to the dedicated beer drinkers that seek out their brewery.
“We’re going to push more for pints and growler fills,” he adds. “We’d like to have more people from the community coming in on a regular basis.”

This is terrible! As a long time OBcean I’m disappointed to see yet another brewery/tasting room moving into the neighborhood. I get the difference between these places vs. the cheap shot bar scene, but talk about oversaturation. I’m sure the owners are fine, well-intentioned people but enough is enough. The pacific-beach-ification of our neighborhood needs to come to an end. OB has always been a place of (relative) harmony but the balance of our community is going off-kilter with yet another watering hole on/near Newport. Hopefully market forces will change this and several will be scuttled before year’s end.
Or you can at least try it for yourself and then decide. I think OB is getting more brewery/tasting rooms than PB BECAUSE of it being less brotastic frat daddy.
And yes there is over saturation of breweries but that goes for the whole city. Where I live (where Hillcrest, University Heights and North Park meet) you can stand at one see five others. Ultimately the best will stand.

OB is saturated with alcohol: I don’t care what name you use, its too much.
Who’s approving all these licenses?
NIMBYs have succeeded at barring a small business, little miss, from a community that fosters and promotes its hobos. The oldest business in OB is the Black. And yet somehow a beer tasting room will increase drunkenness. Idiots persuaded ABC to deny the permit. But a restaurant that serves beer is AOK
