A GoFundMe site has been set up to help former San Diego talk radio show host Stacy Taylor, a former Alpine resident.  A radio personality for multiple stations, most recently KLSD on Air America, Taylor posted on his Facebook page that his house in Rosarito,Mexico was burglarized.

“They got everything of value, computers, jewelry, a camera with 10 years of memories, from Alpine, to Ecuador, to Paris and a hundred places in between. Even all my clothing, running shoes, etc. But these were thieves with a heart as they left me a couple pairs of jeans,”he wrote.

“They also stole the one irreplaceable item, an antique, solid gold pocket watch, that unbelievably still functioned. Wonder what the thieves thought when they snapped open the watch cover and saw the engraving “To Isabella Smith, on her birthday, 1887, from her brother”. She was my maternal Grandmother.”

stacy-taylorBarbara Cummings,  a long-time political activist, started a GoFundMe site. She states,”San Diego has been enriched immensely by having Stacy here fighting the good fight for decades.” She notes that Taylor moved to Mexico after the radio station failed and he lost his job. “He lives a simple life and has made the best of things,” says Cummings.

She says she met Taylor during an anti-war protest outside then-President George W. Bush’s ranch in Crawford, ,Texas, where Cindy Sheehan, mother of a slain U.S. soldier was encamped seeking answers to why the Gulf War  had been started.

“Stacy somehow, got the money, came there to support us and broadcast from there bringing much awareness to the antiwar community,” Cumming said. “We need to do this ASAP for Stacy. Please, every small amount will help him get back onhis feet. “

Within the first two hours,  $800 has been raised toward a goal of $5,000. To donate,  click here:  https://www.gofundme.com/2seem22d

Didn’t this guy make “bank” in radio and has a very good retirement from broadcasting. Should have saved some money and purchased insurance or stayed in the good ol’ USA.

I hadn’t heard that he was robbed of everything. I feel bad for him, I think he had already lost a large amount of his possessions to bad judgment and divorce. He had a blog for awhile where he described life in Mexico and a little bit about how he ended up there. It honestly read like a combination of affable views towards many of the people trying to get by and outright hatred and disdain for the corruption in many Mexican hearts. He described be robbed in Tijuana while at some bar by himself; somebody ripped a gold chain right off his neck and ran off. I think he had a more cynical view of America, than the people all around him in Mexico that were ready to rip him off at the drop of a hat.

I liked listening to him in the 80’s and 90’s, I called into his shows more than once. I never really understood the change in his political views. He went from passionate conservative, to libertarian, to staunch liberal in the span of about 20 years.

The last time I called into his show was literally the day before 9/11, in 2001. It was regarding a topic he brought up about reparations to descendants of slaves, which had been a subject on 60 Minutes recently. It’s funny to think that so much has changed in 20 years and yet so much is the same. Stacy Taylor was on billboards in the late 80’s, today few remember him at all. He was one of the very best ever on the radio in San Diego.
