Tony Mezzadri Surf Classic @ the OB Pier – Saturday, August 15
2009 is a special year for the TMSC. We have much to celebrate! We have accrued 15 years of bringing awareness and fundraising for spinal cord injury research to the local community. Also, Tony and Stacie Mezzadri have been blessed with the birth of their twin daughters, Lola and Ellie. The TMSC would like to share our joy with the community that has supported us.
So come celebrate a family day at the beach, Saturday, August 15th at the OB Pier. We will have live music, food and hopefully some great surf!

Newport Ave Pet Store Looking For Artists for PR for Animal Rescue

They are looking to raise awareness and funds for their county approved pet rescue organization – and would like to invite a different artist each Saturday and Wednesday in summer to set up shop in front of their store in a shaded, covered, heavy foot-traffic shopping area. Hi Folks,
my intent is to have a volunteer/advisory group that isn’t hindered by jurisdictions. The Cliffs fall into several jurisdictions, Federal, State, City and Native (local users.) The city has even further jurisdictions, like the Streets Division being different from the Park and Rec Department. They also have different trash departments, which among other things means no covered (flip top) trash cans, and no recycling bins in our local parks. The city even has different cops for dealing with the homeless (known as the H.O.T. team.)
So anyway…I think we can get more done, more quickly if we are free to operate (and advise) in any jurisdiction. I intend most meetings to be in the field and hands on. For our first meeting I want to focus just on the area from the Santa Cruz stairs North to the OB Pier. Walk and talk and clean as we go.
At the pier we’ll head up the pier stairs, and return to Santa Cruz with a stop each at each dead end street. The dead ends are what I call Micro Parks. We’ll discuss the good, bad and the ugly of the Micro Parks. Wear your swim trunks if you want to go for a dip at the end of our meeting tour.
My schedule is flexible on Friday, but I try to avoid the midday sun from 10 to 2. We can of course have other meetings on different days of the week in the future. Some meetings will have to conform to low tides.

Wed Aug12 10am the city will paint Orchard St wall Tan. ANYONE can come by after they are done to take any left over Tan to coor match any future tags on that wall. (can be used for other things too) So come by AND pick up some free paint. Bring your own bucket or city will have 2 gal emptys to fill.
We have received some good news about Chris Bowd in an email:
“Very good news about Chris! He is recovering quickly. He is coherent
and seems pretty much his old self with the exception of fatigue and
muscle weakness due to lying still so long. He still has a
tracheotomy, but that should come out soon. He is in the interim
rehab facility until he works up to 3 hours of therapy per day, which
doesn’t look like it will take too long and then he moves on to more
intense rehab, but again he is moving very rapidly.”
Though he doesn’t live in O.B., he’s certainly played here enough times, plus he’s one of my oldest and dearest friends, band-mates and even my L.A. room-mate and he had a story done on him in the U-T yesterday so I thought I’d have you meet him….

Has Chris Bowd had anything to say about what happened to him on the 4th of July?
Gary, the detective investigating his case told me he’d let me know if anything broke. I don’t really know if Chris is talking about it. It is the big question, of course: what happened!!! From an earlier report, I was told his memory is very bad. But perhaps it is improving. OB’s very own mystery. I still get pissed off thinking how little the mainstream media in town covered his situation, whereas we heard ad naseum about the assault on the Aussie tourist kid.
Inspired by today’s reader rant, I have a question. Has anyone else noticed that the vibe at South Beach is way more agro this summer? There was always a bit of jostling for tables due to the lack of a hostess/waiting area, but, generally speaking, most people recognized who had arrived before them and respected the line.
Everytime we’ve been this summer, we’ve been snaked by unscrupulous line jumpers who sneak around the back way (or sometimes parade right past us as if we’re standing by the ATM for laughs) and pretend to be sitting with a table that’s about to leave. We’ve confronted a few only to be told, shamelessly, that this is how it’s always been. Too bad, sucker. We’ve been going to South Beach regularly for years, and it hasn’t always been so completely cut throat. If the mahi weren’t so delicious, I’d stop bothering. Is there something the management can do to bring some order back?
Funny you mention South Beach. I had an issue there recently where there was an open table, nobody in sight or waiting for it, and nothing on it. So we sat down and the waitress brough us menus. about 5 minutes later, a group of 3 girls came up and said, “that’s our table!” they claimed the waitress cleared the table while they went out to smoke, and they demanded (quite rudely) that we get up and let them have the table back. We tried to be rational and explain that there was no indication of someone sitting there, but they were welcome to squeeze in and share the table (I as with 2 other girls, and it was not a pick-up line). Instead they flipped out, wanted to speak to the manager and were insanely, over-the-top rude about the whole thing. Not the laid-back vibe we try to keep intact around here. We stood our ground, and the manager told them they would have to sit at the bar or find another table. So, in the end, they missed out on making new friends, and instead made an ass out of themselves in front of the whole bar. Too bad. But, you’re right…it was a pretty “agro” scene. South Beach staff handled it quite well though. Props to them.
Remember too, it’s summertime, and the tourists are out in droves taking over our funky paradise. I appreciate the economic stimulus, and they’re not all so lame, but it’s always nice when they leave and we get our town back…

Chris is now recuperating very rapidly,and now able to talk… Yeah.. He is been visited by all his closest friends and colleagues. He is soon going to next level of rehab. About himself he is definitely upset about the the trauma, and want to return to his home and life desperately. He just have to be patient until the rehabilitation program is over and physicians on his care release him. But this is great news for all of us. Thanks for keeping this alive keep checking for more progress. Frank once again thanks for your support hopefully soon you be able to speak to Chris personally. OB Rag rules spread the word.
Re Chris Bowd – just spoke with Sgt John Berstline who told me that Det Pat Hall has spoken to Chris recently and is following up on info Chris gave him. The police are still seeking help from the community for any info about what happened to Chris July 4th.

I say “fluff piece” in the most respectful way of course. I did enjoy reading it and I’m always happy to see us painted in a positive light.
It might be worth having a regular piece on OB musicians in the Rag. I wonder who would be most likely to write such piece?? Any suggestions DAVE GILBERT?
