OCEAN BEACH, CA.  This is the latest OB Community Bulletin Board. If you have any news, commentary, info, or advice you’d like to share, simply post it in the comments section.

In the meantime, we’re start it out with the following newsy bits.

Hoopers’ Trial Set for September

The four hoopers cited on June 4th for practicing their craft have had their infraction trial set for September 24th.  Four women hoopers – dancers and performers who twirl hola-hoops that have burning wicks – were cited by San Diego Police for fire-related violations as they practiced at the beach in OB.

The four are Allison Walkey, Sara Edgar, Heidi Estevez, and Aesha Shapiro, and they all work in a hooper troupe run by Unity. Frank Gormlie, editor of this blog, also a criminal defense attorney, represents them.  In the meantime, fire performers throughout San Diego County, are getting together to form some kind of coalition.  The coalition is looking into the permit process, meeting with police and fire marshals, and ensuring all performers are doing it safely.  The trial – if it gets to that – will be held at Traffic Court on Clairemont Mesa Blvd.  Watch this blog for more info.

4th Medical Marijuana Dispensary to Open in OB – the 2nd Slated for Newport

A fourth medical marijuana dispensary will be opening on Newport Avenue in the coming weeks and months.  Leases have been signed for a third one coming to the old OB Hardware storefront, and for the fourth to be set up in the old OB Cafe space in the mini-mall in the 4900 block of Newport.  The others are on Voltaire and reported for West Pt Loma Blvd.

OB Rag blogger Doug Porter is currently working on a comprehensive post about the dispensaries of OB.  If you have any ideas or info for Doug, please email the blog at obragblog@gmail.com  .

Can we give World Oil’s “concept” an onion award? I suppose it has to be built already.

Thanks for these great community updates! You might also add the Tony Mezzadri surf classic is coming up on August 15th in OB to benefit Spinal Cord Injury research.

Good call Jon, on both accounts! Give the fossil fuel Barons an onion :P

My current FB profile pic was taken at the Spinal Cord Injury benefit here a couple of years back, fun in the sun and an excellent cause too!

I need a little help from the Rag’s Readers. I’ve started out to do a story about the two pot clinics that are already open in OB. They are “The Beach Collective” (on Voltaire ST) and “Mother Nuture” (on W. Point Loma). I figured that the best way to allay some of the fears that people have about the new clinics would be to profile the ones that already exist. It hasn’t turned out to be so easy to do. The owners/managers of these clinics are avoiding the opportunity to get their side of the story out. I’ve visited both clinics, made phone calls to the numbers that the employees have given me…and nada.
If you know ANYTHING about these clinics, please send us an email: obragblog@gmail.com.

Hey everyone
Mark your calenders.
The Ocean Beach Historical Society is hosting it monthly general meeting Fri Aug 14th 7pm at the Masonic center.
This meetings topic is legendary men and women surfers of the 30s-60s.
The meeting will be presented by local surfer Cher Pendarvis.
This will be our second surf history program presented by Cher.
The first was so popular we decided to do it again only this time at a larger venue.
We will be honoring some classic old school birds and babes.
Among them will be Jim “Mouse” Robb and some of his friends original Sunset Cliffs surfers.
Also scheduled to attend is Linda Benson, former world champion surfer and stunt double for giget in the movies.
Plan on arriving early we are expecting a large turn-out.

We have heard from Chris Bowd’s friends: If one wishes to send Chris or his mum any greeting, etc., please send to P0 Box 92877 San Diego CA. 92192. His friends will ensure that Chris receives everything.

This has nothing to do with local Ocean Beach concerns but, since this is a public Ocean Beach bulletin board I thought I’d use it to ask if there is anybody out there who knows of a charity or needy person who wants a perfectly good TV that is also a VHS and DVD player.

avatar Pat August 7, 2009 at 9:23 am

I could use it for some Historical Society
stuff I went to dub a vhs tape the other day and found my vcr wasn’t working.

avatar jon August 7, 2009 at 9:31 am

What’s a VHS?

avatar Gary Gilmore August 7, 2009 at 9:41 am

Pat: It’s yours. Give me a call at the shop (225-1137) and we’ll set up a time to pick it up
Jon. Leave me alone. It’s not polite to make fun of a severly impaired dork. VHS… VCR….STD…WTF… I’m so confused.

avatar Pat August 7, 2009 at 9:44 am

It’s a video tape player.
I’ve got one sitting next to my 8-Track Player

avatar jon August 7, 2009 at 9:52 am

lol. I heard 8-tracks are making a comeback. Along with Laser discs and Beta-max! :)

avatar Dave Gilbert August 7, 2009 at 10:00 am

I hadda tape deck in my car that played both 8 & 4 track tapes, came complete with a spare matchbook to keep certain cartridges from vibrating. ;)

btw, Beta was far superior to VHS but they wouldn’t play ball and so they were quickly forced to the wayside.

I also have well over a thousand 45’s…woo hoo!

avatar Pat August 7, 2009 at 10:54 am

What a revolution being able to listen to your own music in your car.
The sound quality was quite good.
When we started business in OB (mid 70s) we were listening to 8-tracks, The Doobie Brothers, Steve Miller,Bad Company,ZZ Top,Led Zepplin, Deep Purple, BTO, Uriah Heep……on and on
I remember the old match book trick.
So many memories.

avatar Dave Gilbert August 7, 2009 at 2:34 pm

Great memories! I remember the 1st time I heard one of my old bands songs being played over my car radio on KGB, it was an awesome feeling!

My little brother (God rest his soul) had a ’56 DeSoto that, besides coming stock with a Hemi and a push button automatic transmission, also offered you a phonograph as an option. I still can’t figure out how you were supposed to keep your records from getting warped from the heat of the Sun though. LOL!

avatar Frank Gormlie August 7, 2009 at 2:39 pm

Wow, what chatter. Nobody’s gettin’ any work done, I can see that now.

avatar doug porter August 7, 2009 at 2:48 pm

yeah! get to work frank!

avatar Frank Gormlie August 7, 2009 at 2:51 pm

whoops, busted. Doug, Jon, anyone else – poker tonight?
