Wednesday      January 13th  7 p.m.      The Golden Rule Peaceship Presentation
at the Ocean Beach Green Center, 4843 B Voltaire Street, Ocean Beach 92107

Come enjoy a presentation by Captain Ron Kohl and Crew Member Allen McAfee as they share their experience sailing on the Golden Rule Peaceship.  This 30 foot wooden sailboat set out in 1958 toward the restricted zone of the Marshall Islands; the object was to stop the testing of atomic bombs. Come learn about its voyage, the arrest of its crew, its sinking, its restoration and its current mission to create a nuclear free future.  Free of Charge  :-)    Refreshments will be available for a suggested donation.

Thursday    January 14th Coastal Commission to Give Final Okay to OB Community Plan

The Calif Coastal Commission meets this week to vote on final concurrence with the City Council’s November 2015 adoption of the revised plan. The item is scheduled for Thursday (no specific time given) and the meeting location is the SD County Administration Center on Pacific Highway.  Because the policy issues have been resolved, this final approval is not expected to be controversial or occupy much time on the agenda. As shown in the attached staff report, Coastal Commission staff recommends approval.

We will be continuing with the Emmy award winning 2014 documentary focusing on global warming.  January will feature Episodes 5 and 6 from “Years of Living Dangerously”.  Each episode features celebrity investigators, who each have a history of environmental activism, and well-known journalists, each  of whom have a background in environmental reportage. They travel to areas around the world and throughout the U.S. affected by global warming to interview experts and ordinary people affected by and seeking solutions to the effects of global warming.  Free of Charge  :-)

at the P.L. United Methodist Church, 1984 Sunset Cliffs Blvd.

Join us Jan. 21 as Claudia Jack presents “OB’s History of VOLUNTEERISM”. The many organizations and volunteers are what has helped make OB special… from it’s parade, beach clean-ups, planning board, Friends of the Library, and many more. We are thankful to the multitude of caring and helpful residents that are the heart of our beach town. Claudia will include information about the many local organizations and how you can get involved and keep OB’s wonderful community volunteerism spirit alive!

January 13th  9am City Council’s Rules Committee Considers Ballot Proposal for Community Review Board on Police Practices – (arrival 8:30 recommended)  San Diego City Hall — 202 C St, San Diego, California 92101; 12th Floor Committee Room

City Council’s Rules Committee will consider Ballot Proposals submitted on behalf of 20 civic organizations who endorse a Charter Amendment for a truly independendent Community Review Board on Police Practices. Everyone is encouraged to show up to show that San Diegans need to be given the opportunity to vote on this issue. The Committee Chair is Sherri Lightner, with the Vice Chair as Council President Pro Tem Marti Emerald, and Members Myrtle Cole, Chris Cate and Mark Kersey.

January 23rd Saturday 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Green Presidential Candidates Forum Grassroots Oasis, 3130 Moore St, San Diego 92110.

Hosted by the Green Party of California (GPCA), the forum will feature four candidates seeking the Green Party’s presidential nomination – Darryl Cherney, William Kreml, Kent Mesplay and Jill Stein (the Green Party’s 2012 nominee) – and is open and free to all Greens on a space-available basis. The Presidential Candidates Forum will be followed by a courtyard dinner and reception from 6-7:30pm with the presidential candidates (dinner available from vegetarian food truck on-site); followed by an evening program with elected Greens and other Green success stories in San Diego County. At our January meeting we have three races to consider, with three club members running as candidates. As well as the two state races for Point Loma & Ocean Beach SD39 and AD78 we will also vote on the City Council race for District 1 that covers Carmel Valley, Del Mar Heights, La Jolla, Pacific Highlands Ranch, Torrey Hills, Torrey Pines and University City.
