Editor: OB Rag blogger Jon Carr and local photographer Jim Grant are heading up a clean-up of the Veteran’s Memorial at the foot of Newport Ave this Saturday morning. The Memorial was grossly soiled by marshmallows thrown two weeks ago on July 4th.
The clean-up is at 1:00 pm and volunteers are asked to bring appropriate cleaning implements.
Jon and Jim are asking community members to join them to deal with a community mess left over from the annual gooey blob toss, which has been the center of a recent controversy about whether OB should even continue the Marshmallow War.
Jon sent this to us asking us to get the word out.
With the recent reader rant “Make Love, Not Smores” (http://obrag.org/?p=9995) posted on the obrag, we have seen first-hand the mess left over from marshmallow hurling revelers on the 4th of July. There’s been a lot of talk both in support of the marshmallow fight, and against it. While we are obviously not going to come to a consensus on the blog about letting things continue or trying to stop the tradition, I’m pretty sure we can all come to an agreement that the mess left behind and the desecration of our beloved veterans war memorial is unacceptable.
So rather than blog about it all day, let’s go clean it up! Jim Grant, myself, and hopefully some of you will meet at the veterans memorial tomorrow Saturday July 18th at 1:00pm to begin the removal of the mallow-mess. We would suggest bringing a bucket of warm/hot water, and some sort of scrubbing brush. We would prefer not to scrape at the memorial with metal or anything to aggressive, in order to avoid any further damage.

A scraper, medium bristle brush, bucket….mild cleaner if you have any.

We got GREAT results today. Hot water in a 5 galon bucket a medium bristle deck brush and a scraper is all we needed. We need 5-7 to help with this for a couple hours and we can reverse the damage. We cleaned about 200 square feet today in an hour.
