An unidentified woman is fighting for her life after she was thrown from an electric scooter after it struck a crack in the road in Ocean Beach.
The 27-year-old woman was riding a Bird scooter Sunday afternoon, Jan. 17, on Cape May Avenue heading west towards the beach when the scooter hit a crack in the sidewalk. She was launched over the handlebars and head-first onto the pavement, SDPD said.
Medics transported her to the hospital, where she has remained with life-threatening injuries, including a brain bleed and a fractured skull. It is not known whether she was wearing a helmet.
SDPD’s Traffic division is investigating the incident.
At least two people have died and several others have been injured from crashes on dockless scooters in San Diego, which gained widespread popularity 2018 and forced the San Diego City Council to find ways to regulate their use.
California legislators – including our then Sacramento-housed Mayor Gloria – did away with the helmet requirement for electric scooters as soon as they became popular.
It is also unclear how the rider hit a “crack in the sidewalk,” – was she riding on the sidewalk?

Todd’s introducing the repeal of the scooter helmet law was a very important factor in my decision to support Barbara Bry. It was completely irresponsible and will lead to many injuries and deaths. A very sad thing.
If this unfortunate woman sues the city because of a crack in the sidewalk, Gloria is fully responsible. If she sues and wins, we need to ban these things immediately. Too bad Bry was not elected.
The irony is Bacon street in the photo is the worst street in OB. Had she attempted to ride on that street as required, she would’ve crashed AND been run over.
It was so much more than just a repeal of our helmet law….
They removed the ability of every municipality in CA to create their own helmet laws for scooters. Which I find to be a ridiculous overstep by the state (and the Bird lobbyists).
Hello! Thank you for sharing such stories, I hope this woman gets better as soon as possible. I also had an accident recently, but fortunately, everything went without serious injuries. I was walking on the right side of the road my way to work in early September and I was hit from the back by a car, I was on the hood, then she turned off and I rolled off in the ditch… The lady that hit me took me to the Emergency Room, gave me 20$, and left, I’ve done a police report, and was out of the hospital
